Thinking aloud: The illusion of Mental Health First Aid provision in the workplace: ▶ We have two MH First Aiders (ones the bosses' daughter/son) ▶ We haven’t completed a Workplace Stress Risk Assessment ▶ We haven’t surveyed the staff to get their opinion ▶ We don’t have a MH First Aider Policy in place that covers gossip, acceptable contact timings, monitoring of MHFA wellbeing Workplace stress isn't about sending two staff on a MH First Aid Course and having a policy prepared for Safe Contractor and CHAS The Illusion of Mental Health Provision ... an elephant that exists in far too many workplaces *Fit for Purpose PCR Global Limited #risk #workplacestress #mentalhealth

For over 70 years, the Samaritans have offered aid and support to those in need. On this day, Samaritans Awareness Day, we remember the outstanding work of all those volunteers who have, quite literally, saved lives all over the UK. Why today? The date is 24/7 - just like Samaritans helplines. The H&S Department would like to support the Samaritans Awareness Day by reminding all businesses we have a legal responsibility to take a role in this important work and consider the steps their businesses have taken to safeguard mental health in the workplace. Remember, employers have a legal duty to protect workers from stress at work by doing a risk assessment and acting on it. This is the same duty they have to protect people from other health and safety risks. A few things you are required to do; • Complete a First Aid Needs Assessment, which now must include mental health as an aspect. • Identify sources of stress in the workplace, assess them and reduce the risk as far as reasonably practicable. A few things you can consider: • Training your staff to recognise signs of stress in the workplace. • Provide a mental health first aider at work. • Provide occupational health or a mental health service as part of a workplace benefits offering. Please get in touch if you would like to arrange a First Aid Needs Assessment or Mental Health First Aid training, we’d be happy to discuss ways to help your business and look after your people. #SamaritansAwarenessDay #HealthAndSafety #SMEBusiness

Through our Mental Health First Aid initiative, we’ve trained 7 volunteers from our team to become workplace first aiders. Our aim is to give every member of our workforce access to immediate mental health support, raise awareness of and create opportunities to talk about mental health, encourage people to seek help from a trusted colleague, equip our team with the tools to recognise when someone might be struggling and know how to support them. Each of our first aiders has earned an accredited, internationally recognised Level 3 award in Mental Health First Aid in the Workplace (RQF) with excellent training delivered by Red Umbrella. The engineering industry is still overwhelmingly populated by male employees – 90% of our own workforce are men – and research highlights that men are more reluctant or find it more difficult to talk about their mental health or access support. As an employer, it’s important for us to embed mental health awareness into our business, create safe places to talk and make it normal to check in on each other. We’ve also created more opportunities for our team to step away from their work and engage with colleagues over wellbeing lunches in our recently remodelled coffee lounge or as part of our social walking group. #MensMentalHealthMonth #mentalhealth #business #engineering

WHY MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID MATTERS NOW MORE THAN EVER... With recent updates to workplace health and safety legislation, leaders and teams are being called to go beyond just physical safety. Mental health and psychosocial safety are now front and center in creating a thriving, legally compliant workplace. But this isn't just about meeting regulations—it's about ensuring your people feel safe, supported, and valued in every dimension of their well-being. For me, this is deeply personal. I’ve lost an ex-partner and several cherished friends who have died by suicide. These losses have shaped my unwavering commitment to creating safer spaces where mental health is openly acknowledged and supported. I know firsthand how critical it is to equip people with the tools to recognise when someone is struggling and the confidence to step in and help. Mental Health First Aid training is a powerful way to take action. It equips us with the skills to recognise, respond to, and support colleagues/family/friends who may be experiencing mental health challenges. It helps break the stigma around mental health and builds confidence to start conversations that can genuinely save lives. You also will meet the growing psychosocial safety requirements with action, not just intention. I’m running several public Mental Health First Aid training sessions across December and January— and can also rollout to organisations. Let’s work together to ensure your workplace is not only compliant but truly committed to your people’s well-being. Are you ready to invest in your team’s well-being? Let’s talk! www.sarahscottpaul.com #mentalhealth #mentalhealthfirstaid #psychosocial

Today, on #WorldMentalHealthDay, we’re shining a light on the importance of supporting the mental wellbeing of our incredible team. 🐾Caring for our caregivers🐾 Our Vets, Nurses and Customer Experience teams dedicate themselves to providing exceptional care to pets and their owners every day. We’re committed to fostering a culture where mental health is prioritised just as much as physical health. Here are a few ways we look after our team: 🌟 Mental health resources: We provide access to counselling services and mental health support for all staff members. ⏳ Flexible working: We provide flexible working to ensure our teams can maintain a healthy work-life balance. 🤝 Peer support: We have several colleagues across our group who have undertaken training to become certified Mental Health First Aiders. Anyone can reach out to one of these trained individuals to receive confidential support. Anyone with an interest in mental health can also put themselves forward for Mental Health First Aider training. 📚 Wellness training: Many of our team members have recently attended a talk by Business Psychologist Sue Firth on the subject of building resilience and managing stress. Sue shared some accompanying resources that are being shared around our surgeries so everyone can benefit. This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we thank our team for the compassion they bring, not just to the pets in our care, but to each other as well. #TheVet #VeterinaryWellness #WorldMentalHealthDay #SupportEachOther #TeamCare #MentalHealthMatters

Great asset to my portfolio as such an important topic.
During #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek it's significant, now more than ever, to remember that mental health first aid is just as important as physical first aid, and that people should speak out when they need support. That's why, at Connect Health, we’ve invested in training over 20 colleagues to become Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) through MHFA England. Our network of MHFAs compliment the range of other tools we have in place through our 'Boost' healthy workplace programme, which supports the mental health and wellbeing of our wonderful colleagues. Mental Health First Aiders are trained volunteers who act as a first point of contact for anyone who is experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress, of a work-related or personal nature. These interactions can range from having an initial conversation, to supporting and signposting individuals to get appropriate support. Becky Robson, Chief People Officer, shares: "Mental Health First Aiders in the workplace serve as compassionate guides, fostering a supportive environment where individuals feel heard and valued. Our investment in our network of MHFAs is an essential step towards a healthier, more resilient workforce as we drive forward our People Centred approach." The 2024 HSE Guidance on First-Aid Needs Assessments now includes mental health considerations within first-aid needs assessments. This marks a notable shift from the 2018 guidance, which primarily focused on physical first aid. The updated guidance reflects a more holistic approach to workplace health and safety, underlining the importance of addressing both mental and physical health emergencies. This change aligns with the broader trend of integrating mental health care into all health and safety practices, underscoring the evolving role of comprehensive first-aid training in creating a safer and more supportive work environment. As such, it is now encouraged that employers consider mental health needs alongside physical health concerns when conducting first-aid assessments, as detailed in the new guidance.
