Thinking aloud: The illusion of Mental Health First Aid provision in the workplace: ▶ We have two MH First Aiders (ones the bosses' daughter/son) ▶ We haven’t completed a Workplace Stress Risk Assessment ▶ We haven’t surveyed the staff to get their opinion ▶ We don’t have a MH First Aider Policy in place that covers gossip, acceptable contact timings, monitoring of MHFA wellbeing Workplace stress isn't about sending two staff on a MH First Aid Course and having a policy prepared for Safe Contractor and CHAS The Illusion of Mental Health Provision ... an elephant that exists in far too many workplaces *Fit for Purpose PCR Global Limited #risk #workplacestress #mentalhealth

Maybe have a look first at whether it’s the workplace itself causing mental ill health. No amount of policy or personnel is going to fix that.

Another ,informative and thought provoking post again Mr Protheroe 🤔 Raises questions, do companies care? , do they want to look like they care? , or are they, unsure of how to correctly care for the mental health of their staff?

Andrew Protheroe MSc MSc FIoL FIIRSM CMIOSH CQP MCQI - just about all of the palliative & tertiary interventions forced onto working people are illusions of care and integrity by owners, employers, executives & ‘leaders’..! Good, proper, meaningful, secure work that is safe, healthy & well paid shouldn’t need the conniving and patronising bullshittery that dominates these days to mask the negative effects of shit💩work and even shittier 💩pay..!! I don’t know your business other than what you post on LinkedIn, why do you need mental health first aiders..?

I would start with conducting a needs analysis and this would involve all staff - ideally at an away day event where everyone feels free to speak about where the shortcomings are and how the organisation can feel the gaps and what staff feel comfortable with. The organisation should then formulate their mental health and wellbeing strategy based upon staff feedback. I agree that certain schemes just allow organisations to do the minimum

At a company I used to work for we were all offered mental Health first aider courses (I did not end up doing one but got most of my team through it) yet if anything happened at work HR would tell anyone who went near it off as it was not their job. Seemed like a fairly token course to tick a box rather than creating a genuine capability.

Andy always love your informative videos, this one especially, I have taken this onboard and especially site engineering and office staff, which sometimes there is a divide on the stress levels, who has the most stress, but stress is stress.

Tick in the box exercise. Shows the illusion of a proactive employer.
