Understanding and having awareness about strokes and the impact it has on people is vital for the care sector.

May is Action on Stroke Month, a critical time to raise awareness and improve care for stroke survivors. At The Institute of Registered Case Managers, we are committed to supporting Case Managers in their vital roles. According to our 2023 survey, 5% of Case Managers have a scope of practice that includes working with individuals recovering from a stroke. This highlights the importance of specialised knowledge and resources in this area. We would like to share the National Clinical Guidelines for Stroke for the UK and Ireland. These guidelines were collaboratively developed by the Royal College of Physicians, Healthcare Improvement Scotland, and Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. This document provides comprehensive guidelines on the organisation of stroke services, acute care, rehabilitation and recovery, long-term management, and secondary prevention. These guidelines are NICE accredited, ensuring they meet the highest standards of care. By following these guidelines, Case Managers can ensure they provide the best possible support to stroke survivors throughout their recovery journey. There are 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK, and many will require support to engage in physical activity, which will aid their recovery and benefit their overall health and wellbeing. In the second webinar in our six-part Major Conditions and Personalised Care series, Dr Sarah Moore, Associate Professor at Northumbria University and Honorary member of the Stroke Research Group at Newcastle University, will show how personalised care interventions can be used to support people to engage in long-term physical activity after a stroke in a way that works for them.
