Awake At Work’s Post

"Look at me juggling six things at once!" (While doing none of them particularly well.) The truth? Multi-tasking feels productive in the moment, but the results are usually less than stellar. My typical Monday morning looked like this: Start writing an important email... Get distracted by a notification... Check calendar for a meeting time... 30 minutes later, realize my original email is still sitting unsent. Recently, I've been practicing mono-tasking, that is, giving my full attention to one thing at a time. Here's what the rub: we don't have enough time to do everything we could ever want to do. But we DO have time to make the one task in front of us something worth our while. Mono-tasking isn't just more efficient, it gives dignity to the person in front of us and our work. When I'm fully present in a conversation, I'm saying "you matter." When I focus on writing, I'm honoring the ideas that deserve to be expressed well. What's one task today that deserves your full, undivided attention? #AwakeAtWork #MindfulWork #MonoTasking #WorkplaceMindfulness

  • A pale green graphic labeled “mindful moves.” The text reads: “Multi-tasking feels productive. But most of the time, it’s exhausting. How many times have you realized you didn’t send that email, finish that task, or follow up because your attention was diverted? Focusing on the task at hand is a gift to both you and the process.” At the bottom is a meditating figure and the words “awake at work.”

I'm so guilty of this! I'll start an email and then get pulled twenty different ways. Today I'll be intentional about contribute to the current pressing internal/external email thread that I have key info that I could contribute significant clarity to.

I like to remind myself that there's a finite amount of work I can tackle in my life. I'll never get to everything. So! I might as well focus on the few things that I can deliver.
