👏 to all speakers and experts for discussing the design of a long-term African Union and European Union partnership for sustainable energies – an inspiring session, which we were proud to organise and host! Renewable energy is a top priority for sustainable and liveable development in both the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU). The EU’s Green Deal reinforces its commitment to advancing renewable energy, while the AU recognises renewable energy as essential to the continent’s sustainable development. A key factor in achieving this ambitious goal is fostering an African-European partnership that promotes continuous research, development and dissemination of new solutions. Yesterday, our DLR-PT Office in Brussels hosted a session of the AERAP Africa-Europe Science Collaboration Forum at the South African Embassy in Brussels. The session discussed these issues: ➡️ How to build a sustainable long-term AU-EU partnership for renewable energy ➡️ What operational priorities need to be addressed in order to promote the impact of research equally on both continents? With insights from Isayvani Naicker, Sigfried Tivana, Léonard Lévêque and Friederike Mathey, the participants discussed and prioritised actions necessary for realising an AU-EU partnership. I was invited to share my experience at the AERAP session organised by DLR on "Connecting Global Priorities: How to Build a Sustainable Long-term African-European Partnership for Renewable Energies? " African countries are serious about investing in renewable energy. South Africa, for example, started with the development of a Hydrogen Strategy in 2006, with a "National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Research, Development, and Innovation Strategy" published in May 2007. I was part of the Strategy Working Group whose objective was to prepare a strategic framework for publicly funded R&D in Hydrogen and Fuel Cell (H&FC) Technologies to position South Africa to play a role in the emerging energy economy in which hydrogen was predicted to play a significant role. While a transition to renewable energy is the global goal, energy access remains the priority in Africa. The continent needs energy to close the gap in terms of income and welfare, between the region and the rest of the world, for global convergence. In this context, the African Common Position on Energy Access and Just Energy Transition adopted on 22 July 2022 by the African Union (AU) Executive Council states that “Africa will continue to deploy all forms of its abundant energy resources, including renewable and non-renewable energy to address energy demand.” The Africa-Europe partnership is critical to taking forward Research and innovation as a key driver for the green transition in Africa and Europe. We need to work at convergence in development and access to counter polarisation. #africaeuropeinnovationpartnership #greentransition #renewableenergy

I am utterly thrilled and honoured being invited to speak at Global Energy Transition Congress and Exhibition taking place on 1-3 July 2024 in Milano. During my panel session, I will be speaking on this hot topic: "THE ENERGY TRANSITION IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA". To address challenges complexity of energy transition in Sub-Saharan Africa, crucial parameters should be considered at the same time: Access to modern energy, rapidly growing and overwhelmingly youthful populations, and geopolitical instability. The main point will be how to extract maximum value from the continent’s abundant natural resources in a way not to the detriment of growth prospects. So, it is vital that stakeholders across #Africa and the international community pursue energy transition initiatives and economic incentives that are both sensitive to historic realities and conducive to future prosperity. Get more on the full strategic conference agenda here: https://lnkd.in/eHzgRUAY With the support of former #BritishPrimeMinister #TonyBlair, who will deliver the event’s opening keynote address, this first Congress aims to bring together senior executive leaders from the energy industry and hard-to-abate sectors, along with governments, NGOs, “Big Tech”, academics and financiers. Join us for further conversation at #GETCongress2024 coming July in #Milano

💡 Green Deal 2024: Dr.-Ing.George Pechlivanoglou., Director General of Eunice Energy Group, emphasizes the strategic importance of energy storage systems 💡 In his speech at the Green Deal 2024 conference organized by the Technical Chamber of Greece, Dr. Pechlivanoglou analyzed the fundamental necessity of developing advanced energy storage systems, with particular emphasis on the #BESS Ptolemaida project. This project has been classified as a Project of Common Interest (PCI), underscoring its significance for pan-European energy security and sustainability. ☑️ While the interconnection of the islands is of critical importance, energy security cannot be achieved solely through these measures. Complementary investments in energy storage are essential to ensure energy autonomy and adequacy for critical needs, such as water supply through desalination. ✌️ "#Greece has the potential to become an energy and information hub for the green transition," stated Dr. Pechlivanoglou, highlighting the need for immediate and targeted action from the political and regulatory framework. Accelerating the permitting processes and creating favorable conditions for investors are crucial factors to maintain investment interest and attract human resources from abroad to support these investments. In this period of global technological and geopolitical transformation, energy and developments in artificial intelligence will determine the path towards the future. The need for immediate action is imperative. 🚀 #GreenDeal #EnergyStorage #BESSPtolemaida #EuniceEnergy #RenewableEnergy #GreenTransition #PCI #EnergySecurity

🌍 How can we secure a sustainable energy future in Belgium? And what role will industrial flexibility play? These crucial questions lie at the heart of the GALILEO project, which was officially launched earlier this month! Coordinated by EnergyVille / VITO and funded by the Energy Transition Fund, this groundbreaking initiative brings together top academic and industrial players to tackle one of the biggest challenges of our time: building a more flexible and resilient electricity grid in the midst of rapid decarbonisation. 🔑 Key objectives of GALILEO: - Explore the potential of industrial flexibility. - Overcome barriers to the provision of flexibility. - Innovate energy procurement strategies. - Support robust business cases for industry players. Through real-world demonstration cases with leading companies and a comprehensive roadmap for industrial flexibility, GALILEO aims not only to strengthen Belgium’s position in the energy transition, but also to set a precedent for industrial decarbonisation and electrification across Europe. Innovating the Future of Energy at Climate Talks Peru 2024 💡 I'm proud to share that LSH's Technical Director, Dr. Karl-Heinz Nagel, recently participated in two panel discussions at the Climate Talks Peru 2024, hosted by the German Embassy and supported by the Peruvian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHK). Dr. Nagel, alongside esteemed panellists Jean-Louis G. (Phelan Green Energy), Germain Salazar López (Minera Cerro Verde), Santiago Bautista (Siemens Energy), and Xavier Vallejos (MAN Energy Solutions), delved into the role of Pump Storage Technology and Green Hydrogen in shaping Peru's energy future. The discussion focused on the potential of green hydrogen for domestic energy supply and export to Europe and how pump storage technology can contribute to a sustainable, financially viable production of green hydrogen in Peru and energy transition worldwide. It was moderated by Jan Patrick Häntsche, Innovation and Technology Manager at the Peruvian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Daniel Camac, President of H2 Perú, gave an interesting keynote on the role of hydrogen in Peru's energy transition.
