🌱 Great to see how innovation and sustainability go hand in hand across the Südzucker Group.

Ook op ons proefplatform duurzame landbouw zijn vorige week de veldwerkzaamheden volop gestart. Op dit platform werken we voor het vierde jaar op rij samen met Raffinerie Tirlemontoise - Tiense Suikerraffinaderij en BENEO om duurzame landbouwtechnieken in de praktijk te testen. Vorige week werden de percelen zomerveldboon en cichorei ingezaaid. Vandaag was het de beurt aan het perceel suikerbiet. In elke teelt vergelijken we drie types van grondbewerking en zaai: ploegen, niet-kerende grondbewerking en directzaai. 🌿 Meer groen en meer biodiversiteit aan onze bezinkingsvijvers! 🌿 (English below ⤵️ )   Aan de vijver langs de Oude Getestraat, hebben we onlangs een biodivers groenscherm aangeplant. Maar liefst 400 stuks van zeven streekeigen plantensoorten zullen hier uitgroeien tot een prachtige struikengordel. Dit zorgt niet alleen voor een mooier landschap, maar helpt ook de dijken te verstevigen en draagt bij aan de biodiversiteit.   💚 In de lente zal een bloeiend doornstruweel talloze insecten aantrekken, terwijl de bessen in het najaar een voedselbron vormen voor vele vogelsoorten. In het bijzonder hebben we aandacht voor de zeldzame zomertortel, die in dit gebied nog een geschikte broedplaats vindt. Door de uitzaai van lokaal geoogst zaad van bosrank maken we het leefgebied extra aantrekkelijk voor deze bijzondere duivensoort.   Dit initiatief kwam tot stand dankzij een waardevolle samenwerking met Natuurpunt, Regionaal Landschap Zuid-Hageland en De Winning - vzw groenwerk. No fewer than 400 plants from seven native species will grow here into a beautiful shrub belt. This not only enhances the landscape but also helps strengthen the dikes and contributes to biodiversity. 💚 In spring, a blooming thorn thicket will attract countless insects, while the berries in autumn will provide a food source for many bird species. Special attention is given to the rare European turtle dove, which still finds a suitable breeding ground in this area. By sowing locally harvested clematis seeds, we are making the habitat even more attractive for this remarkable dove species. This initiative was made possible thanks to a valuable collaboration with Natuurpunt, Regionaal Landschap Zuid-Hageland and De Winning - vzw groenwerk. Vandaag had ik de eer om in Tienen de officiële start te geven van een Europese primeur: de hoog temperatuur warmtepomp van de Raffinerie Tirlemontoise - Tiense Suikerraffinaderij. Met een thermische capaciteit van 4 megawatt en een temperatuur van 140°C is deze installatie een belangrijke stap in de klimaattransitie van de voedingsindustrie. Vlaanderen heeft een sterke voedingssector en innovatie speelt een cruciale rol in de transitie naar een toekomstbestendige economie. Dit project – gerealiseerd in samenwerking met GEA Group, TNO, Danish Technological Institute en Südzucker Group – toont aan hoe bedrijven, kennisinstellingen en overheden samen impact kunnen maken. 🌱 Industrial innovation: A European first at Raffinerie Tirlemontoise - Tiense Suikerraffinaderij! 🌍 Yesterday, we proudly inaugurated a groundbreaking high-temperature industrial heat pump – the first of its kind in Europe! With a thermal capacity of 4 megawatts and the ability to generate heat up to 140°C, this technology allows us to efficiently reuse waste heat, increasing energy efficiency, reducing CO₂ emissions, and reinforcing a circular production process. Developed by GEA Group and supported by the SPIRIT Horizon Europe Project, this innovation marks a major step in making our sugar production more sustainable while contributing to the CO₂ reduction goals of the Südzucker Group. 🚀 Key impact figures: 🔹 Reduces up to 3000 to 3500 tons of CO₂ emissions annually 🔹 Achieves a Coefficient of Performance of 3.0 – 5.0, delivering up to five times more heat than the electricity it consumes "The installation of this heat pump marks a significant milestone in our journey toward zero CO₂ emissions by 2050," says Ingels Jan, Director of Factories at Tiense Suikerraffinaderij. "This initiative is a vital part of our broader sustainability strategy and aligns with the Südzucker Group’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. It demonstrates our commitment to a greener future and reinforces Tiense Suikerraffinaderij's pioneering role in driving sustainability within the food sector." The project was made possible through collaboration between leading European research and industrial partners. In addition to GEA Group as the heat pump manufacturer, TNO, Danish Technological Institute, and Südzucker Group’s engineering team contributed to its development.
