On May 1, 2024 from 5:15 - 6:45 p.m. at 1025 Queen Street West in #Toronto , CAMH is hosting a HYBRID event: "What’s next for MAiD for mental illness?" In March 2024, changes to #Canada ’s #MedicalAssistanceInDying ( #MAiD ) law were delayed. The changes would have expanded MAiD eligibility so that people whose only medical condition is #mentalillness could apply. With this delay, many people may be asking: what now? Join a panel of experts as they explore what this means for people with lived experience of mental illness, and their families and loved ones. Questions from the audience will also be discussed. If you have a question for the panel, you can send it in advance. If you’re joining in-person you will also be able to submit questions during the event. To learn more and register for both the virtual and in-person event, visit the event registration page: https://lnkd.in/gm_JexYh

Resource alert‼️ Discover an incredible resource from Mental Health America: "The Parity Implementation Coalition provides this toolkit as an aid for individuals in and seeking recovery from addiction and mental illness and their families, providers and advocates to help them understand their new rights and benefits under the parity law. The toolkit is designed to be a resource in how to better communicate with plans, how to ably prepare and document information should disputes arise with a health plan over coverage or reimbursement and better understand your basic appeals rights and procedures. Clearly, every plan has its own appeals policies and procedures and each plan participant must become informed about his or her own plan’s appeals process." Content warning: Suicide and suicidal thoughts Statistics show that up to 40% of British carers experience suicidal thoughts. A shocking one in six are likely to attempt suicide and one in 10 have already attempted it. It can be a heavy topic, but with Suicide Prevention Day today, it's vital to open up conversations and shed light on the often overlooked risk of suicide for unpaid carers. We worked with qualified therapist and specialist mental-health copywriter, Lottie Storey MBACP, to highlight the risk factors, protective measures, and where to get immediate or longer-term help: https://lnkd.in/eVgCZzyp We would urge you to share this important work with carers in your community. “Hands down the best talk I have listened to, to date. A part of me wants to send the link to everyone….State Reps, State Senators, the Governor, media outlets, mental health professionals, friends, family, everyone!" For those of you who have not watched Darrell Herrmann’s recent Peer Tak, I highly encourage you to do so. You will have a greater understanding of what it is like to live with a psychotic illness and what is needed for a meaningful recovery. His expertise in living with a psychotic illness will help identify the failures of our current system and hopefully help bring about the change that is needed throughout the country. #shatteringsilence #recoveryispossible #right2treatment https://lnkd.in/gwkrFCnn

TW: Suicide It’s #WSPD #worldsuicidepreventionday today. About 20% of us experience suicidal ideation, ranging from wanting to ‘go to sleep and not wake up’ through to actively planning how to end life. For some groups, though, the statistics are higher - 40% in the case of unpaid carers. It was an honour to write an article on this topic for Mobilise | B Corp who do such excellent work in supporting unpaid carers. We discuss the factors that make this population more at risk of suicidal ideation as well as the protective factors that help lower the risk. Risk/protective factors are applicable to all of us, so it’s worth checking how you and those around you fare through this lens. As always, if you need help then please find a way to get what you need ❤️ #starttheconversation *If you are in crisis and need urgent help, please contact The Samaritans on 116123, speak to your GP or go to A&E.*

The overall costs of mental ill health equate to double the NHS's entire budget in England in 2022 (£153bn). Focusing on prevention and improving the mental health provision for young people, as outlined in yesterday's King's Speech, is a good place for the new Government to start. As we've always said, prevention and early intervention are key to supporting the mental health of the nation, and we look forward to working with the government on this and other measures. #kingsspeech #mentalhealth #healthprovision #onebright #prevention #earlyintervention

This month, AFMC is promoting International Overdose Awareness Day as part of our partnership with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). International Overdose Awareness Day is a global event held on August 31st each year to raise awareness of overdoses and reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, while also acknowledging the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died or had a permanent injury because of drug overdose. In addition to International Overdose Awareness Day, SAMHSA also commemorates International Overdose Awareness Week and has a 2024 toolkit available. View the toolkit here: https://hubs.ly/Q02LsfnQ0 There are resources, media toolkits, and educational material which can help the public recognize whether a person is experiencing an overdose, know what to do if a person may be experiencing an overdose, and much more. Together, we can #endoverdose #togetherwecan
