Happy Halloween! A happy Halloween is also a safe Halloween, so make sure you know your risks when picking your costumes and decorations. Here’s a quick check list as you prepare for your holiday fun: - Only let adults carve pumpkins and handle carving knives – 55% of Halloween injuries reported are pumpkin-carving related! Kids can help scoop out the pumpkin with a spoon or use a marker to draw the design. - Use battery-operated lights or glow sticks rather than open candles, and never leave candles unattended - Wear a costume that fits and isn’t too long or baggy, and with eye and nose holes that permit full visibility and breathing. 25% of injuries reported are related to falls from tripping on costumes or while decorating. - Use reflective tape as a costume trim or carry glow sticks to help visibility in lower light, and always have kids cross the streets with adults. Ramping up for Halloween? Play safe and remember to: Wear Reflective Gear or Carry Lights: Make sure costumes include reflective elements or that children carry flashlights or glow sticks. This helps drivers see them, especially after dark. Stay on Sidewalks and Crosswalks: Use sidewalks whenever possible, and cross the street at designated crosswalks. Avoid running across the road to ensure drivers have time to see and stop for you. Choose Safe Costumes: Costumes should fit properly to prevent tripping and not obstruct vision. Avoid masks that limit peripheral sight, and consider face paint instead. Go with a Group and Stay in Familiar Areas: Children should trick-or-treat in groups or with an adult, sticking to well-lit and familiar neighborhoods for added safety. Inspect Candy Before Eating: Wait until returning home to inspect all treats. Discard any unwrapped or suspicious items to ensure they are safe to eat. Have a fun and safe Halloween! 🎃
