The Sanctuary model is an evidence-based practice model that enhances staff capacity to understand and respond to the impact of trauma. We know that youth justice systems, across Australia, are often systems in need of reform; the Sanctuary model provides a blueprint to support healing, growth and development.

In our latest blog post, Sanctuary Program Director Cameron Burgess shares a personal account of his recent visit to the State of Colorado's #DivisionofYouthServices. For over a decade, they’ve embraced the #Sanctuary model, a trauma-informed approach transforming their youth detention system. Through daily reflective practices, young people engage in conversations about what makes them feel unsafe, their emotions, and their hopes for the future. This human-centred approach is creating profound change. Exciting news for ShelterLink and our community! 🌟 The collaboration between FearIsNotLove and YW Calgary has reached a milestone: ShelterLink is now available as an app on all Calgary Police Patrol Officers' phones. 📲 What does this mean? When responding to domestic calls, CPS officers can now instantly tap into the availability of emergency women's shelters in Calgary and the surrounding area. In a city where shelter availability is often limited, ensuring someone has a safe place to go is crucial. With ShelterLink, officers can swiftly locate bed availability, providing timely support to those in need. The ShelterLink platform seamlessly connects women’s shelters with emergency and non-emergency services, enhancing collaboration and service delivery. It establishes a robust System-of-Care partnership, extending immediate support to those escaping domestic violence through shelters or community services. No one is left without support. #ShelterLink #DomesticViolenceSupport #YWCalgary #YYC #WeAreYW #YWCA #FearIsNotLove #Calgary #yycnow 🌟

Los Angeles is burning—it feels apocalyptic, like the end of the world. But how are we protecting the most vulnerable? 🔥 Mandatory evacuations are underway for some of LA’s wealthiest areas. Yet, just a mile from the #HurstFire, 85 incarcerated youth at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall remain in harm’s way. We cannot let this be another tale of two cities. Justice and equity demand that we protect all lives, especially the most vulnerable. 💡 As this moment feels like the end, how do we seed new beginnings for justice? • Protect all communities, not just the wealthy. • Commit to justice even in crisis. 🌱 Amidst tragedy, this is our moment to plant the seeds for a future rooted in fairness and humanity. #JusticeForYouth #EquityInCrisis #FreeTheYouth #LosAngeles #HumanRights #EndFamilySeparation

At House of Refuge, we understand that the journey to safety and stability for survivors of domestic violence is filled with many challenges. That’s why our approach goes beyond immediate shelter, addressing the deeper causes of homelessness through employment, education, and financial literacy. We offer job training, resume support, and connections to local employers, helping individuals build careers and work towards independence. Through our educational and financial literacy programs, we equip clients with the skills to budget, improve credit, and secure safe, stable housing. This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, stand with us as we work to remove the obstacles that keep survivors trapped in the cycle of abuse and homelessness. #DVAwarenesss #HealingHappensHere

This is going to be a bit political, which is unusual for my LinkedIn feed. Here's a video from my friend Andrew Horton, remembering the #AntiHomelessSpikes he brought to the nation's attention 10 years ago today. These spikes were removed, but the dehumanising treatment of homeless people continues, not least in the proposed #CriminalJusticeBill. This bill proposes new powers for police and local authorities to enforce against so-called ‘nuisance rough sleeping’ in England and Wales, including being moved on, a fine up to £2,500 and even imprisonment. This bill will not pass in this parliament because of the looming general election. Homelessness charity Crisis is calling "the next Westminster government not to reintroduce the Bill or any new legislation that criminalises homelessness, and to fully repeal the Vagrancy Act.", and organised an open letter to Home Secretary James Cleverly in April 2024 calling for the government to reconsider plans to criminalise street homelessness in the Bill. The letter was signed by 37 organisations. After the next election, I plan to write to my MP (whether that be the current incumbent or someone new), and urge them to oppose this bill, at least in its current form. (The Bill also seems to attack further the right to protest, but that's a post for another time). Homeless people are people. Let's not allow them to be treated otherwise. Here's a few links from people much better informed about these things than I am (EDIT - just putting in parts of the addresses so you can see what you are clicking on before the LinkedIn-mangled version of the link): [www gov uk]/government/publications/criminal-justice-bill-2023-factsheets/criminal-justice-bill-nuisance-begging-and-rough-sleeping: https://lnkd.in/gQMNk7XS [www crisis org uk]/get-involved/campaign/the-criminal-justice-bill-and-homelessness: https://lnkd.in/gPDHWpCt [www crisis org uk]/about-us/media-centre/letter-to-home-secretary-james-cleverly-on-government-proposals-to-criminalise-rough-sleeping/: https://lnkd.in/gvXPueDv [www bigissue com]/news/housing/criminal-justice-bill-tory-rough-sleeping-open-letter/: https://lnkd.in/gHsTDSJ4 [www theguardian com]/commentisfree/article/2024/may/21/suella-braverman-unlawfully-curbed-protest-protect-rights: https://lnkd.in/gdXZjAax
I won't forget this day and the days that followed. On 6th June 2014, I kickstarted a media frenzy about #AntiHomelessSpikes outside a block of flats in south London. I've never known my phone to run so hot with social media notifications and calls from journalists. I made this video primarily for my kids, as a record of those events and my reaction to them. But I'm also grateful to my wife Rhiannon Horton and my old chum Phil Maltz, for their fab camera work and editing respectively. With a new job in full swing at Church Army UK & Ireland, I've not had the headspace to find out exactly what's changed in terms of hostile architecture over the last ten years. But the proposed #CriminalJusticeBill (whatever happens on 4 July) threatens to dehumanise homeless people even further. This is not right. Let's do all we can to respond to what we see wrong in the world. #Homelessness #TraumaHomelessness #HostileArchitecture #RoughSleeping Crisis, Shelter, Oasis Community Housing, Marylebone Project, London City Mission, Oasis UK, Homeless Link.
