Today is World Hunger Day, a time to reflect on the critical issue of food insecurity affecting millions worldwide, including its significant impact here in the U.S. According to a 2024 report from Feeding America: 🌍 Food insecurity exists in all 3,144 counties and county equivalents as well as all 435 congressional districts in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. 🌎 Child food insecurity rates reach almost 50% in some counties across the U.S. 🌏 The national average cost per meal, which reflects how much money people who are food secure report spending on food, has also reached its highest point in the last two decades. At Sharebite, we're dedicated to being part of the solution, working hand-in-hand with partners like Feeding America and City Harvest. To date, we have donated 9.5 million meals and counting to communities in need across the U.S. While today serves as a significant reminder, our commitment to fighting hunger extends far beyond just one day. Hello LinkedIn 👋 We’re the Community Share Food Bank (CSFB), serving the Don Mills community in Toronto for 20 years. Community Share was founded in response to the growing issue of food insecurity in our community. The need was clear, and our initiative began with a simple yet profound mission: to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry. 20 years of alleviating hunger later, our commitment remains as the need grows. CSFB usage has skyrocketed over the past few years, with a 130% increase since 2019. Change is long overdue. The rising costs of living paired with the expiration of some Pandemic benefits have intensified food insecurity across southwestern Pennsylvania as families work to meet basic needs. Calls to our PA 211 Southwest resource hotline has seen a 50% increase in food assistance inquiries over the past year. Between 2021 and 2022, the annual survival budget for a family of four in Pennsylvania rose to nearly $89,000 from $80,000. “This budget reflects only the basics and no extras,” says Jen Schuchart, director of meeting basic needs. “Folks who are working full-time or multiple jobs are having to make these difficult choices of whether to pay rent or feed themselves and their children. Isn't it weird thinking your neighbor might be hungry? It boggles my mind that 1 out of every 5 kids are food insecure in this country. The food is there, but our systems? Broken. And our children who are paying the price. - We have decent programs in place, but they need support, funding, and advocacy to work at their full potential. - We have the food, but we need to build better pathways to get it into the hands of kids who need it most. - And most importantly, we have the people—you and me—who can step up and be part of the solution. A few ways to help: -Donate to organizations on the frontlines -Advocate for policies that strengthen food security -Volunteer at your local food bank -Acknowledge this problem exists! -Don't remain silent Childhood hunger is solvable. Hunger relief organizations are in crisis. Especially those in rural areas. When I say hunger relief I mean the food shelves/pantries, school pantries and organizations doing the actual WORK Why are they in crisis? Answer: the need is the HIGHEST it’s ever been, they’re small organizations that don’t have the budgetary capacity to expand, they don’t have the human capacity to serve and the people above them making decisions don’t understand what is truly happening in rural communities nor do they have the compassion to physically come help. Our rural community organizations need help in every way possible. It’s time for us to show our human compassion and capabilities
