As we strive for greater diversity and inclusion in the workplace, one powerful avenue is often overlooked: internships. Companies have a unique opportunity to not only provide valuable learning experiences but also to actively cultivate a diverse talent pipeline. Recent statistics from a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reveal that Black students accounted for only 6% of paid interns, and Hispanic students made up only 10.2% of unpaid interns. Financial barriers should never stand in the way of opportunity. Paid internships not only provide much-needed income for students but also ensure that access to valuable professional experiences is equitable for all. It's an investment in the future workforce and a step towards leveling the playing field. Understanding the importance of internships as more than just temporary roles where fetching coffee or making copies should be the norm. Internships should be carefully designed to not only provide valuable work experience but also to serve as an opportunity for both interns and the company to assess if it is a mutual fit. By giving interns real responsibilities and allowing them to contribute to real projects, you can create a win-win situation where both the intern and the company can learn and grow together. Those smiles can only mean one thing... it's Draft Day! Today I got to join our NGSA Summer Interns in Round Rock, TX as they learned who's team they would be joining for the remainder of the summer. The excitement, community, and eagerness to get started was undeniable--I can't wait to see the incredible things you accomplish alongside each other. For those of you completing summer internships, here are four tips I'd like to share with you: 1. Lean into your experience. Raise your hand in the classroom, ask the 'silly' question, and volunteer for the project. Maximize every day and you'll walk away knowing that you got the most out of your summer internship. 2. Build a network. There are many tenured and passionate industry professionals who have waited months to invest in you--seek out their mentorship and form connections. 3. Look at failure as another piece of the puzzle. As uncomfortable as it may seem, trust that every obstacle and setback leads you one step closer to success. 4. Explore the city you're in! Whether you're close to home or visiting somewhere new for the first time, be intentional in immersing yourself.
