As we strive for greater diversity and inclusion in the workplace, one powerful avenue is often overlooked: internships. Companies have a unique opportunity to not only provide valuable learning experiences but also to actively cultivate a diverse talent pipeline. Recent statistics from a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reveal that Black students accounted for only 6% of paid interns, and Hispanic students made up only 10.2% of unpaid interns. Financial barriers should never stand in the way of opportunity. Paid internships not only provide much-needed income for students but also ensure that access to valuable professional experiences is equitable for all. It's an investment in the future workforce and a step towards leveling the playing field. Understanding the importance of internships as more than just temporary roles where fetching coffee or making copies should be the norm. Internships should be carefully designed to not only provide valuable work experience but also to serve as an opportunity for both interns and the company to assess if it is a mutual fit. By giving interns real responsibilities and allowing them to contribute to real projects, you can create a win-win situation where both the intern and the company can learn and grow together. Be committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace through meaningful internships and creating a brighter, more equitable future for all. #InternshipEquality #InclusionMatters

Did you know that only 7.9% of paid internships are currently secured by Hispanic students? This statistic highlights a significant opportunity gap that we have to fix to build a more inclusive and diverse workforce. As employers, we have a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact. By offering paid internships, we can create better opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds and ensure that economic barriers do not hinder their professional growth. By making these changes, we can bridge the gap and ensure that Hispanic students, and all students from diverse backgrounds, have equal opportunities to thrive in their careers. Let’s work together to create a future where diversity is not just an aspiration but a reality. Your efforts in offering paid internships can help shape a more inclusive and equitable workforce. #PaidInternships #HispanicStudents #FutureWorkforce #wearethefuture #CareerGrowth #latinos

“7,000 paid internships, 35+ sectors, 1,000+ organisations all in just four years”… Last week, The 10,000 Interns Foundation celebrated the publication of our first impact report! The foundation set out to provide 10,000 internships to underrepresented talent, first with our flagship programme, 10,000 Black Interns, later supplemented by the addition of 10,000 Able Interns. Our mission is to change the face of British business, and 7,000 internships later, we’re off to a strong start. Our first impact report explores and quantifies the extent of the foundation’s footprint, and is a great representation of our journey so far. I wrote some bits and pieces on the development of the 10,000 Able Interns programme (sneak peek below), which you can find alongside the rest of the report here: https://lnkd.in/eVSR9Afw Huge well done to our Chief Impact Officer, Nana Campbell on putting together such an insightful report, and Rae Philip, Rebecca Achieng Ajulu-Bushell, and the rest of the team for putting together a monumental evening of celebration. Such milestones can only be achieved by a collective push of a community, and we can’t wait to reach our next milestone with you all! ID: Our impact report in physical print, published as a newspaper. The headline reads “Addressing Intersectionality: 10,000 Able Interns Programme”, accompanied by an image of myself giving a talk, and my written piece on the 10KAI programme.

Is the Internship Model Broken? Internships, often touted as stepping stones to successful careers, are increasingly becoming a source of frustration and exploitation. While they offer valuable learning opportunities, many interns are finding themselves in a situation where they contribute significantly to their organizations without receiving adequate compensation or respect. Key concerns: * Unpaid or Underpaid: Many internships are unpaid or offer meager stipends, forcing interns to bear the financial burden of living expenses. * Lack of Respect: Interns often face a lack of respect, being treated as expendable labor rather than valued members of the team. * Limited Learning Opportunities: In some cases, internships fail to provide meaningful learning experiences, leaving interns feeling underutilized and disillusioned. * Safety Concerns: Female interns, in particular, face a heightened risk of harassment and discrimination. What can we do? It's time to rethink the internship model. Organizations must prioritize fair compensation, respect, and meaningful learning experiences for interns. By doing so, we can ensure that internships continue to serve as valuable stepping stones for young professionals. Let's make a change. Share this post and help raise awareness about the issues facing interns. Together, we can create a more equitable and supportive environment for future generations. #internship #internshipreform #fairpay #respect #learnings #opportunity #careerdevelopment #genderequality

The issue is prevalent within the legal profession and necessitates the establishment of clear and comprehensive rules and regulations. I have observed numerous firms exploiting interns, which underscores the urgent need for reform. #interns #exploitation #law #legal #Socalledfirm #Socalledcorporate..

We need to do better
Did you know? According to a study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, only 18.1% of interns are Hispanic or Latino. Even more concerning, Hispanic students are more likely to never have an internship, and a mere 7.9% of paid internships go to Hispanic students. It's key to recognize the importance of paying interns, especially to attract students who equally need the experience and financial support. Many Latino and minority students work tirelessly to support themselves and their families through college, making paid internships not just beneficial but necessary. By offering paid internships, companies can level the playing field and provide valuable opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to gain hands-on experience, build professional networks, and pave the way for future career success. If we work together, we can create inclusive internship programs that support and empower students of all backgrounds and bridge the gap to equal access to opportunities for the next generation of leaders. #LatinosAreTheFuture #EmpowerLatinos #Internships

So important for everyone to consider the impact of these statistics. There is so much to unpack and take into account within these statistics. For my fiends hiring interns…have we considered who we are hiring? Diversifying industries isn’t something that happens from one day to the next. I would love to see the breakdown for other demographics. Dissertation focus? 🤔 💡

Happy National Intern Day! 🎉 Today, we celebrate the energy, creativity, and fresh perspectives that interns bring to the workplace. Internships play a vital role in shaping careers and fostering innovation across industries. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of mentoring many bright students as they took their first steps into the workforce. Each cohort has taught me something new, pushing me to grow and evolve alongside them. I've witnessed firsthand the impact these programs have in driving positive change. Interns and early career professionals bring so much to organizations: they challenge norms, ask insightful questions, and drive innovation. By creating meaningful opportunities for those starting their careers, we're not just shaping individual careers - we're building stronger, more dynamic workplaces. Here's to the interns – past, present, and future. Thank you for your enthusiasm, your impact on the workplace, and the countless ways you continue to inspire and educate us. #NationalInternDay #EmergingTalent #FutureLeaders

This is one of the reasons we will be launching managed internships for students in the Spring 2025 semester. Internships can be an extraordinary component in allowing students to get comfortable in the field and hit the ground running post graduation. It’s also an amazing way to vent candidates before they graduate and makes the full time employment transition easier for companies. However it can be hard for all students to participate not just because of the application process but they might have personal issues that prevent them from taking an internship. Transportation, childcare, and financial considerations might prevent students from even applying in the first place. Students with an interest in working in the tech field (both technical and non-technical majors) at Maryville University of Saint Louis will have the opportunity this coming spring semester to participate in on campus managed internships building, designing and developing technical tools for faculty, staff and our community. #internships #technology #highereducation #artificialintelligence https://lnkd.in/ghpVcZeG

Happy National Intern Day! If your organization is truly committed to equity and inclusion, you should be paying your interns. If internships are part of your recruiting strategy for full time hires, and you want a diverse workforce, you need to pay your interns. Unpaid internships are not accessible to the many students who need to work to pay for school, food, and housing. If you think saying you are open to providing credit makes it all better, you should know that students may have to pay thousands of dollars for the internship course at their college or university for which they now need to register just to accept the internship. If they can't afford that, you've just limited your applicant pool and may have lost some really talented candidates. #PayYourInterns #CareerReadiness #Equity
