🌿 🇺🇳The International Maritime Organization is on the cusp of striking the world’s first global carbon pricing deal for any industry. “If that happens, it’ll be a major milestone for climate policy and a turning point for shipping,” said WSC’s CEO Joe Kramek. 🚢 To succeed, the measure must help bridge the price gap between fossil fuels and cleaner alternatives, including zero and near-zero (ZNZ) fuels. That’s essential to drive investment in green energy and fuel supply, and to build the economies of scale needed to reduce cost over time. However, key elements of the agreement remain to be resolved – which will determine how effective the agreement will be in delivering a regulatory regime that enables an energy transition in the global fleet. 🤝 WSC has been working with Singapore and other IMO member states to build consensus around a global proposal capable of driving decarbonisation in shipping. 🚢 🌐 This week, WSC’s Joe Kramek spoke on the panel 'A New Era – Blue or Gray Skies Ahead? Navigating Global Commerce’ at the 19th Annual Capital Link International Shipping Forum in New York City, US. 🇺🇸 The forum discussed the latest developments in the global shipping from energy and commodity markets, financial and capital markets, as well as critical industry topics such as geopolitics, energy security, sanctions, access to capital, regulation, technology, innovation and more. 🌿 Joe commented on decarbonization of the shipping industry, and the IMO MECP83 taking place next week: “From the liner shipping perspective, we are ahead out of many sectors in terms of decarbonization. We have 200 dual-fuel ships on the water right now and 700 on the orderbooks representing conservatively $200 Billion in new build investment. But the question is, are they going to run on the new or old fuels? Because the new fuels are three to four times as costly, and the renewable fuels are still not being produced. The next two weeks, the IMO is in session with the GHG Working Group and MEPC83 where they really need to come together on this global framework and we all know we want some certainty out there. We need to have a measure that balances out this three to four time price gap”, says WSC Joe Kramek. #NetZero2050. A special thank you to Daniel Tadros from The American P&I Club, Ken O’Brien from Gemini Shippers, Bill Rooney from Kuehne+Nagel and moderator Senthil Subramanian from Ernst & Young on discussing the future of global shipping. PIL Charts the Course for a Greener Future 🌱🚢 Our member Pacific International Lines (PTE) Ltd has taken another significant step toward a greener future with the launch of Kota Embun, the fourth in its series of 14,000 TEU dual-fuel vessels! Since 2022, PIL has ordered 18 new-built vessels, aiming to replace up to half of its fleet over the next decade with modern, eco-friendly ships and charters. This commitment aligns with the IMO’s 2023 GHG Strategy, setting an ambitious target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. To enable the transition, green maritime fuels must be available at scale and affordable. For real progress, the industry needs global cooperation on ambitious climate measures. That’s why #MEPC83 is crucial—IMO member states must align on an IMO Net-Zero Framework to ensure green fuels can compete effectively with fossil fuels. See more below 👇
𝗣𝗜𝗟 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝟭𝟰,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗧𝗘𝗨 𝗟𝗡𝗚 𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹-𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹, 𝗞𝗼𝘁𝗮 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗻 🆕🚢 It’s another new milestone for PIL as we have named our fourth and final 14,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessel from Jiangnan Shipyard, Kota Embun! This is also our first vessel that features a bow windshield for improved aerodynamics to reduce fuel consumption! 🙋♀️💧 The vessel was named Kota Embun by Mrs. Evelyn Ng, wife of Mr. Ng Kee Choe, Deputy Chairman of PIL, in a ceremony held at the shipyard in Shanghai, China today. 𝘌𝘮𝘣𝘶𝘯 means ‘dew’ in Malay, and it symbolises renewal and harmony with nature, reflecting the vessel's role in promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly shipping practices. ♻ 🌱💚 Together with its sister ships (Kota Eagle, Kota Emerald, and Kota Ebony), Kota Embun is the largest vessel in PIL’s fleet. The fuel-saving bow windshield, a new feature in PIL’s fleet, will also help to reduce Kota Embun’s emissions as it plies the West Coast Central and South America Service 2 (WS2) route that it’s scheduled to operate on. 🗣💬 Mr Lars Kastrup, CEO of PIL, said, "The naming of Kota Embun, our fourth “E” Class vessel, is testament to the excellent progress we are making in our fleet renewal drive and journey towards greener shipping. We have another 14 new vessels of various capacities, equipped with LNG dual-fuel technology and other advancements. Each new vessel brings us closer to our goal of operating a more modern and environmentally friendly fleet. They enhance our ability to better meet global trade demands and support our customers with wider and more efficient services.” Read the full press release here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eSVUtVsc #PIL #PacificInternationalLines #KotaEmbun #Shipping #Sustainability #LNG
