International Chamber of Shipping reposted this
Last week in Seoul, over 100 senior officials representing 29 member governments and 26 other participating countries working on #CleanEnergy discussed and agreed what to prioritise towards the upcoming 16th Clean Energy Ministerial meeting in Busan, Korea later this year in August, which coincides with the next APEC - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. The Clean Energy Marine Hubs (CEM-HUBS) will be high on the agenda for the #EnergyMinisters meeting as demand for #futurefuels and the required #maritime #infrastructure will be debated, notably after the landmark agreement reached at MEPC83 at the IMO last week which sets the industry on a decarbonisation path. Government officials heard about the outcomes of the public-private workshop held in London a few weeks ago hosted by founder partner International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and agreed to move forward on developing a #PortReadinessTool to safely handle, and deploy #FutureFuels at scale. Collaboration also began between the CEM-HUBS team and the Clean Energy Ministerial CCUS Initiative as well as the representatives from the CEM Biofuture Platform Initiative, UNIDO's Hydrogen Trade Forum, the International Energy Agency (IEA) & High-Level Climate Champions' Breakthrough Agenda and the World Economic Forum. Next stop, the high-level ICS-led event in June in Greece with the global #maritime private sector followed by the #CEM16 Ministerial meeting in August in Korea. 🌎 The International Chamber of Shipping, Helio E S G Vicente, Employment Affairs Director; Thomas Boddy, Policy Officer; and Emmy Ramirez-Asencio, Office Coordinator, remain in Geneva, coordinating the global Shipowners Group in ongoing minimum wage negotiations with the global seafarers group, led by the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF). These negotiations follow the recent meeting to update the International Labour Organization's Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), held under the auspices of the ILO’s Joint Maritime Commission (JMC). The primary purpose of the meeting is to review and update the recommended global minimum monthly basic wage for able seafarers, as outlined in the MLC. Maritime transport is the only sector in the world with a formally recognised global minimum wage, a unique standard that has been in place since 1958. We extend our sincere thanks to the Shipowners Leading Negotiation Team: Mr Pål Tangen (Norwegian Shipowners' Association (Norges Rederiforbund)', who serves as spokesperson for the Group, supported by Mr Tim Springett (UK Chamber of Shipping) and Mr Gerardo Borromeo (Filipino Shipowners Association). #Shipping #Seafarers #ILO #SocialDialogue #MaritimeLabour #SeafarersWage #ICS #ILOJMC

🗣New press release: Vehicle Carrier Safety Forum publishes guidance on fire response. Tuesday 15 April, London: Today the Vehicle Carrier Safety Forum (VCSF) publishes its second industry good practice guidelines entitled ‘Fire Response – High Level Guidelines’. The VCSF recognises that responding to vehicle fires onboard PCCs, PCTCs, RoRo and Ro-Pax vessels is both dangerous and challenging. These guidelines have been designed to reduce the risk to the safety of crews, passengers, the environment, the vessel and the cargo. The guideline’s sole aim is to assist vessel operators and crews to be better prepared to meet the challenges presented by vehicle fires. The Vehicle Carrier Safety Forum is a consortium of vessel operators, insurers and other industry experts, whose role is to promote safety on vessels designed to carry vehicles. The guidance is supported by industry bodies the International Group of P&I Clubs, the International Chamber of Shipping and the TT Club. The guidelines are intended to be used by vessel operators when considering their own fire response policies and procedures with a particular emphasis on using existing fixed firefighting systems to control vehicle fires early in their development. 🗣️ New Statement: ICS cautiously welcomes critically important global agreement on shipping’s decarbonisation journey After many years of negotiations, the International Chamber of Shipping welcomes the agreement today at the International Maritime Organization of a critically important package of new greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction regulations – the “IMO net-zero framework” – to help ensure that international shipping will transition to net zero by or close to 2050. Speaking at the conclusion of the high-stakes IMO meeting (MEPC 83), Guy Platten, Secretary General of the ICS said: “Today will hopefully be remembered as a historic moment for our industry. If formally adopted, shipping will be the first sector to have a globally agreed carbon price, something which ICS has been advocating for since COP 26 in 2021, when the industry agreed a net zero 2050 target." “Shipping is now at the forefront of efforts to decarbonise rapidly to address the climate crisis. The world’s governments have now come forward with a comprehensive agreement which, although not perfect in every respect, we very much hope will be formally adopted later this year. On behalf of the industry I would like to thank Member States and the IMO for their exceptional hard work in achieving this agreement in challenging political circumstances."
