We love seeing the magic that happens when disciplines intersect. A big thank you to Nadav Berger and Peter Bodenheimer for visiting the N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative; and to Celeste Brogdon for inviting our CEO, Charles Dykes, to join the conversation. It was a fantastic opportunity to explore the synergies between food innovation, plant science, and entrepreneurship. We also had the pleasure of joining the Alternative Protein class led by Bill Aimutis and Rohan Shirwaiker, where Nadav Berger, Toni Bucci, Doug Grant, and Charles Dykes shared invaluable insights. The students’ curiosity and engagement were truly inspiring. At Ummino, we’re all about building bridges across ecosystems to accelerate innovation. We're grateful to be part of conversations shaping the future of food.

I love it when my interdisciplinary worlds collide. Huge thanks to Nadav Berger and Peter Bodenheimer for visiting the N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative and letting me show you and Julie Emsing Mann around yesterday. I also had the opportunity to sit in on Bill Aimutis and Rohan Shirwaiker’s Alternative Protein class and listen to Nadav, Toni Bucci, Charles Dykes, and Doug Grant share their entrepreneurship/startup stories. Lots of great engagement with very inquisitive students. Such a pleasure connecting friends across food innovation, plant science, and alternative protein entrepreneurship! #plantscience #foodinnovation #altprotein

  • A recent survey from Statista across 31 countries revealed a powerful truth: Mental health is the #1 health concern in the world today, surpassing even cancer, stress, and obesity. That tells us something urgent and deeply human. We’re all feeling it. At Ummino, we know Mental health doesn’t live in isolation. The #gut and the #brain are deeply connected, so much so, the gut is often called our second brain. Anxiety, depression, and emotional well-being are closely influenced by the state of our gut microbiome, inflammation levels, and the foods we consume every day. The post-pandemic world has opened hearts and minds to talk about mental health more openly. Now it’s time to take that conversation deeper. To the root. To the gut. To the systems that silently shape how we feel, think, and live. We’re building real solutions at Ummino to support both the body and the mind, because healing happens when we see the full picture. 🧠 Let’s normalize mental health. 🦠 Let’s prioritize gut health as part of that journey. 🤝 Let’s co-create a future of whole-person care. #MentalHealth #GutHealth #GutBrainConnection #Ummino #Wellbeing #HealthInnovation #HealingFromWithin #MicrobiomeHealth #FutureOfCare

A survey of people from 31 different countries around the world found that mental health was the biggest health problem respondents said was facing their country in 2024. Other health problems reported by respondents included cancer, stress, and obesity.    One side effect of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a focus on mental health around the world. The two most common mental health issues worldwide are anxiety disorders and depression. In 2021, it was estimated that around 4.4 percent of the global population had an anxiety disorder, while four percent suffered from depression. Rates of depression are higher among females than males, with some 4.3 percent of females suffering from depression, compared to 2.9 percent of men. However, rates of suicide in most countries are higher among men than women. One positive outcome of the COVID-19 pandemic and the spotlight it shined on mental health may be a decrease in stigma surrounding mental health issues and seeking help for such issues. This would be a positive development as many people around the world do not or cannot receive the necessary treatment they need for their mental health.

Excited to share this fantastic infographic from Kristina Campbell, capturing the essence of her talk in Amsterdam! Gut health isn’t just about prebiotics, probiotics, and supplements; it’s also about quality sleep, stress management, regular exercise, a nourishing diet, and avoiding harmful additives. Plus, the gut-brain connection plays a crucial role in mental health. With chronic diseases and mental health concerns on the rise, prioritizing diet and lifestyle is key to extending our healthspan and preventing disease. At Ummino, we’re passionate about raising awareness and empowering people to make lasting, healthy choices. Let’s unlock the power of your health together! #GutHealth #PreventativeHealth #BrainHealth #HealthyLifestyle #Wellness #Ummino

I'm obsessed with this cartoonists' rendering of my talk in Amsterdam last month! The idea: focusing on the science of gut health can bring new energy to conversations about preventative health & extending 'healthspan'. (It means diet & lifestyle take center stage!) With rates of chronic disease and mental illness continuing to increase, there's no time to lose⏳ Thank you to Amsterdam Green Campus for this visual rendering & Atoesa Farokhi and Sahar El Aidy for organizing such an impactful public event. 💫

Prescription drug use is at an all-time high, 70% of adults and 40% of kids took a prescription medication in the past year. Meanwhile, chronic disease continues to rise. But the shift is happening. Consumers are embracing natural, integrative approaches to wellness. We’re proud to be backed by Bluestein Ventures, which is investing in companies leading the de-prescription movement, including our work in gut health, alongside innovators in hormonal health and food-as-medicine. At Ummino, we’re on a mission to transform gut health and be part of the future of wellness. Are you working on a solution in this space? Let’s connect! #GutHealth #Microbiome #HealthInnovation #WellnessRevolution #Ummino

💊 Prescription drug use has skyrocketed. In fact, 70% of adults and 40% of kids have taken a prescription medication in the past year. This coincides with unprecedented consumer interest and investment into natural approaches to health and wellness.  We’re bullish on de-prescription—displacing or augmenting prescription drugs through integrated wellness, new modalities, and novel delivery mechanisms. Here’s why: Prescription medication use is reaching a saturation point  • American women and men can expect to spend almost half their lives on prescription meds • At least 25% of people in the US reported using 3+ prescription medicines in the past 30 days, and 14% have used 5 or more At the same time, chronic disease is rising at an alarming rate  • Over 50% of Americans have at least one chronic disease, a number that has been increasing by 7-8 million people every 5 years for the last 20 years • The neurology market (e.g., Alzheimer's Disease, psychotic disorders) is expected to surpass $30B in the next 5 years, up from $21B in 2024 People are seeking alternatives, and we’ve already seen successful players emerge, including companies like Virta Health, Noom, Magic Mind, Thesis, and GEM At Bluestein, we’re backing this shift with investments in:   Hormonal health → Milamend  Gut health → BiomeSense, Ummino  Food-as-medicine → Attane Health   Are you working in de-prescription or know founders disrupting the paradigm? We’d love to hear from you in the comments!
