Interreg Aurora funded project to preserve and promote the centuries-old cross-border cultural heritage in Torne River
About us
The project consists of four work packages, which include activities ranging from developing a safeguarding strategy to a mobile exhibition, VR tools, and applications. The goal is to increase awareness of the cross-border dipnet fishing culture through e.g. events, podcasts, and marketing materials. A key part of the project is the transmission of knowledge to younger generations. Tradition practitioners, fishing communities, municipalities, organizations, and other stakeholders are involved in the sustainable conservation work within the project. The Torne Valley Dipnet Culture project is a collaboration between the City of Tornio (lead partner), the City of Haparanda, the Norrbotten Museum/Region Norrbotten, and Novia University of Applied Sciences. The umbrella organization ProSiika ry is an official partner of the project and represents the traditional communities and associations on both sides of the border. The Torne Valley Museum is responsible for project administration. Implementation period: 01.08.2024 – 28.2.2027 Project manager: Merja Stenberg, merja.stenberg@tornio.fi

Thursday, March 27th was one of the most significant days of the year, a date that will be remembered as a milestone, as the UNESCO application was completed and we had the opportunity to watch the short documentary about the dipnet fishing on the Torne River. The evening continued with the "Dipnet Evening" gathering, attended by around one hundred practitioners, stakeholders, city representatives, and museum professionals. The application will be sent to Paris today, signed by the cultural ministers, and we can be proud that this valuable tradition has received the recognition it deserves. Together, we will await UNESCO’s decision in December 2026. A warm thank you to everyone who participated in the making of the film and the application process. Special thanks to ProSiika ry, the producers of the film at Brightnest, our funders Interreg Aurora, the Inkeri and Mauri Vänskä Foundation, and the cities of Tornion kaupunki - City of Tornio and Haparanda stad. A New Visual Identity for the Dipnet Fishing Culture of the Torne River! We are proud to present the newly completed visual identity of the cross-border dipnet fishing culture of the Torne River! This stunning ensemble—logo, visual elements, fonts, and color scheme—reflects the rich history of our cultural heritage as a living legacy. "In designing the visual identity for Torne dipnet dipnetting, I wanted to emphasize its deep connection to cultural heritage and nature. Dipnet fishing is not just a method of fishing; it is part of local identity and community. These aspects and the continuity of traditions served as the foundation for the design." — Severi Romsi, Art Director, Keskiö Design Agency #interregaurora #tvdc #tornevalleydipnetculture #keskiö #haparandatornio Tornion kaupunki - City of Tornio Haparanda stad Interreg Aurora Region Norrbotten Lapin liitto / The Regional Council of Lapland

Lapin Kansa: Expert in cultural heritage work, Julia Autio, is taking the Torne River's traditional dipnet fishing to UNESCO's ICH list; her own journey to the banks of the Väylä (name of Torne River in Meänkieli) took her through Benin and Helsinki. The compilation of the Unesco application is one of the actions withing the work packages of the Torne Valley Dipnet Culture - TVDC projects. Now that the work is nearing completion, the file will be sent to Paris. However, Cultural Heritage Coordinator Julia Autio didn't work alone; she collaborated with a team of experts and tradition practitioners, known as the "Unesco-gruppen". The final inscription may take place at the end of 2026. Meanwhile, there are many other interesting activities in the project: an exhibition opening about the 'UNESCO route' in June 2025 at the Museum of Torne Valley, workshops for stakeholders, the publication of a new website featuring a refreshed visual design, the launch of a 'mini museum on wheels' that the team calls 'Lippobiili' (translated as 'Dipnet Mobile'), and many others. Stay tuned! #interregaurora #tornevalleydipnetculture #tvdc #haparandatornio #intangibleculturalheritage #ich #torneriver #traditionalfishing

The final filming for the UNESCO documentary is now complete! It's time for editing and the "final touches," though we still need to "kill our darlings" since the time limit for the documentary is only 15 minutes, even though we have enough material for at least a one-hour film. We will soon provide more detailed information about the contents of the work packages of the projects. Stay tuned! #interregaurora #tornevalleydipnetculture #tvdc #haparandatornio #intangibleculturalheritage #torneriver #traditionalfishing

We are delighted to announce that Foundation of Inkeri and Mauri Vänskä has granted 15.000 euros for the documentary video about the traditional cross-border dipnet fishing culture. The video has been in progress since the beginning of 2024 and next year 2025 it will be attached to the UNESCO application file. The production company Brightnest from Luleå, Sweden, has been working with the Museum of Torne Valley but also closely with the tradition practitioners and dipnetters on both side of the Torne River in Finland and in Sweden. The grant ensures the best quality and the finalizing of the documentary with extra days for shooting and also an extra days for editing. We feel fantastic about it! The Foundation of Inkeri and Mauri Vänskä was established in 1985, and one of its grant policies states: "5% of the proceeds will be allocated to the Tornion kaupunki - City of Tornio for enhancing and preserving the salmon population in the Torne River, supporting tourism development and related research, as well as for promoting, preserving, and documenting regional cultural and museum activities." Thank you Inkeri ja Mauri Vänskän Säätiö!
