Rethinking How We Define Poverty: It’s More Than Just Income Poverty isn’t just about money—it’s about interconnected challenges in health, education, and living standards. The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), developed by the Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative (OPHI), University of Oxford and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), measures acute poverty across three key areas: 1️⃣ Health: Nutrition and child survival 2️⃣ Education: Years of schooling and attendance 3️⃣ Living Standards: Access to clean water, electricity, and sanitation A person is considered multidimensionally poor if they face deprivations in at least one-third of these weighted indicators, meaning they’re simultaneously struggling with multiple barriers to a decent quality of life. For example, a nutritious diet costs $3.54/day, but many in extreme poverty live on less than $2.15/day—making it impossible to afford the basics for healthy living. A Look at the Last Three Months: The Rapid Response Fund Impact Recent cuts to foreign aid have significantly impacted critical health and nutrition programs aimed at saving lives and improving living standards worldwide. In response, the Rapid Response Fund, in partnership with Founders Pledge, has stepped in to deliver urgent support where it’s needed most. To date, we’ve raised over $3 million and granted $1.3 million to the following recommended charities: International Rescue Committee (Feb 2025): $100,000 for CMAM programming to combat malnutrition in Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, and Chad. Iodine Global Network (March 2025): $50,000 to support iodine nutrition programs, including Madagascar, Mongolia, and South Sudan. GOAL 3 - IMPALA (March 2025): $300,000 to deploy 150 vital signs monitors in Malawi hospitals, preventing 450–750 deaths annually. Sanku (March 2025): $250,000 for dosifiers in 150 Ethiopian mills, reaching 10 million people with fortified flour. Population Services International (March 2025): $300,000 to support 240 community health workers in Angola, serving 96,000 people at risk of malaria. Catholic Relief Services (March 2025): $300,000 for antimalarial distributions to 40,000 children in high-risk areas. Together, we’re bridging gaps, saving lives, and building resilience. 2025 has seen a number of devastating aid and development funding cuts globally. Global health, extreme poverty, and humanitarian programs are at risk. A number of organisations have responded with emergency appeals or response funds, including Unlock Aid's Foreign Aid Bridge Fund and the GlobalGiving Community Aid Fund.
