Updates

  • The Arc San Francisco adamantly rejects the recent statements made by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. As head of the very federal department that funds services and supports for Americans with developmental disabilities, Kennedy’s ignorance is insulting and harmful to our community. His suggestion that “autistic people don’t pay taxes, hold jobs, play baseball, write poems, or use a toilet unassisted” reveals how little he knows of the huge diversity of the I/DD community. We work every day with people who do all these things and MORE. Some people do need support but that does not make their life invaluable. Autism is not a disease to be prevented or healed. This ableist statement is deeply harmful and misinformed. Instead of really focusing on helping people and families, Kennedy is sharing dangerous and unscientific theories about what “causes” autism — from vaccines to something in the environment. At The Arc San Francisco, we know that autism is not something to be “cured.” It is not something to be pitied and feared. Every person deserves dignity, belonging, and the opportunity to live the life they want. Autistic people and anyone with a developmental disability are valuable members of our community and deserve respect, support, and inclusion at every stage of life.

  • This past month, staff and participants from TheArcSF traveled to Sacramento for Capital Action Day to advocate for our community. We met with legislators to share our stories and push for positive change. In these uncertain times, coming together as a community is more important than ever to ensure that programs and services for individuals with disabilities continue at The ArcSF and across California. Budgets can NOT be cut. Your voice matters, too. Join us in advocating for a more inclusive future! Contact your local representatives, support disability services, and stand with us as we continue fighting for equity and access for all. Together, we make change happen. #TheArcSF #IDD #DisabilityRights #InclusionForAll Image Description: Participants holding signs in Sacramento reading "Save Medicaid," "I Am Angry You Don't Hear Me. I am Equal", "There's No Room For Budget Cuts," Accessibility For Disabilities," Disability Rights = Human Rights, "Fund Living Wages for DSPs."

  • 🌟 Stephen’s Advocacy Statement 🌟 "I really like to play basketball and go to the gym with my Arc staff. I want my Arc staff to continue to have time to do these activities with me. It is really helpful, especially when they help me play basketball in the Special Olympics." 🏀💪 Stephen and his mentor, Jason, were connected through the Peer Mentor Program, which is funded by a grant from the City of San Francisco's Department of Disability and Aging Services (DAS).
