It did not take long to experience the knowledge, in-depth foresight and commitment of Red Cross Volunteers Juju Stringfield and Claudia Caballero. As members of The Latino Engagement Team, it’s their primary roll to seek those hard-to-find community members that may need disaster assistance that do not speak English. Every community is safer, thanks to the nearly 3.8 million people who train each year in Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED classes. Approximately half a million cardiac arrests occur each year, with 70% happening outside of a hospital. CPR can make all the difference between life and death to someone in distress. Performed correctly and within minutes of someone experiencing cardiac arrest, CPR can double or triple the chance of survival. Be ready to save a life! Visit redcross.org/takeaclass to find a course near you.

Michelle Streeter, Navy veteran, was tremendously impacted by the historical rainfall that pounded the Rio Grande Valley. She had approximately 10 inches of water in her apartment and was forced to spend the first night in her apartment as it was impossible to exit. When it was safe for Michelle to leave her home she was able to go find refuge at the Harlingen Convention Center, which is a shelter run by the American Red Cross. Earlier this week Red Cross team Manuel Lerma and Juanita Casanova welcomed disaster victim Maria Fuentes to the Multi Assistance Resource Center in Pharr, Texas. Maria was one of many residents recently affected by the torrential rain that hit South, TX. During the event our team was able to inform community members on services that the Red Cross can offer to assist them as well as a clean up kit so they can begin their recovery. People affected by disasters need urgent help now, and we can’t do this alone. You can help by making a financial donation, or signing up to become a volunteer by visiting redcross.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767). Photos By: Juanita P. Casanova

Our team was out at the Mercedes Recreation Center yesterday handing out cleaning supplies and informing the community of Mercedes how they can receive assistance from the Red Cross. This was one of the hardest impacted areas affected with the historic thunderstorm which occurred on March 27, 2025. Minerva Anzaldua, Mercedes resident, suffered a total loss of her home with over 24 inches of water in her home. She stated that she was fortunate that her son, Juan, active military, was able to come help her in her recovery. “This is not the first time I have been affected by flooding in my home and both times the American Red Cross has been there to assist me. I am so thankful for both the Red Cross and all the volunteers that are out here,” said Minerva. People affected by disasters need urgent help now, and we can’t do this alone. You can help by making a financial donation, or signing up to become a volunteer by visiting redcross.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767). By Juanita P. Casanova, Public Affairs volunteer
