“I left this world for three minutes that day,” said David McLarty, a father who collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest during a basketball game. Luckily, twelve brave community members sprang into action. They performed CPR and used an AED before paramedics arrived. Thanks to their intervention, David is alive today. David was able to thank his heroes, stating, “Know that I will be carrying each one of you with me for the rest of my life. Because of your actions, not only do I get to continue on this beautiful thing called life, but three children will get to grow up with their dad." Let David's story be ✨your sign✨ to get trained. We never know when an emergency will occur, but by knowing lifesaving skills, you can be prepared to act in the moments that matter. Meet Red Cross instructor Cornetta Banks! Her passion for teaching lifesaving skills and dedication to her community is exemplary. She started her own business, Stat CPR Training, where she offers children between the ages of 9-15 first aid and CPR for free without certification. When asked why she offers free classes, Cornetta replied, “I am gravitating towards what my heart is telling me to do. My main concern is to make sure children at many different ages begin to learn these lifesaving fundamentals.” Cornetta’s inspiration for focusing on teaching children first aid and CPR basics stems from an impactful memory with her 3-year-old son. He was in the room watching Cornetta as she taught adult students. One day, while Cornetta was at her office with him, she witnessed him replaying everything he had seen. It prompted her to include training for children so that they can grasp a basic understanding of the fundamentals and be prepared for emergencies at a young age. Since then, Cornetta has been focusing on community outreach. Cornetta’s impact cannot be overstated, as one of her students used that training to save her father’s life. After teaching a group of Virginia Beach Girl Scouts, one of the girls, 11-year-old Vada Carawan, was able to save her father’s life by performing CPR when he went into sudden cardiac arrest just 11 days after learning the skill. According to Cornetta, “The most rewarding compensation is knowing that my teaching is making a difference.” Thank you, Cornetta, for your dedication!

Last April, Whitney Willis, a surgical oncology nurse at Rush University System for Health in Chicago, was in Westfield checking out fields for her daughter's upcoming soccer season. The day took an unexpected turn when they came across a bus with the driver frantically waving for help. Without hesitation, Whitney pulled up behind the bus. As she approached, she saw an elderly woman lying on the concrete, motionless. A fence separated Whitney from the woman, so she jumped over it to assess her condition. Whitney confirmed the woman had a pulse and was breathing. With guidance from a 911 operator, Whitney stabilized the woman and kept her responsive until paramedics arrived. The elderly woman was then transported to a local hospital for further care. Thanks to Whitney’s quick thinking and swift actions, the woman received the necessary help and survived. Just weeks before the incident, Whitney had renewed her CPR certification through the American Red Cross. Reflecting on the experience, Whitney shared, “Whatever I could do, I wanted to step in and help at that moment.” For her actions, Whitney was awarded the Red Cross Certificate of Extraordinary Personal Action. Thank you, Whitney, for stepping up during an emergency and helping save a life. American Red Cross of Indiana
