  • Each year, Bay Nature Institute, our region’s leading nature publication, honors the best in the conservation field with their Local Heroes Awards. We are excited to celebrate our very own Mirella Ramos as an Environmental Educator Hero during Bay Nature’s 2025 Local Hero Celebration this Sunday, April 6. Congratulations to Mirella and the 2025 Bay Nature Heroes! This is an outstanding achievement and well-deserved recognition. As the bilingual youth programs manager at Sonoma Land Trust, Mirella has a rare talent for bridging diverse cultures through conservation, mentoring and inspiring the next generation in science, and empowering people from all backgrounds to connect with and protect the natural world. • We mourn the loss of David Myers, a visionary conservationist whose leadership at The Wildlands Conservancy was instrumental in preserving some of California's most iconic landscapes. His collaboration with the Sonoma Land Trust led to the protection and restoration of the Jenner Headlands Preserve and the Estero Americano, safeguarding these coastal treasures for future generations. David's dedication has left an indelible mark on Sonoma County and beyond, preserving the natural beauty that defines our region. We honor him and his legacy through our mission and close partnership with The Wildlands Conservancy.

  • 🌿 This equinox, we reflect on how our relationship with plants and the earth calls us to take action to protect what we love. As Indigenous scientist, mother, and botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer writes in Braiding Sweetgrass: "Action on behalf of life transforms. Because the relationship between self and the world is reciprocal, it is not a question of first getting enlightened or saved and then acting. As we work to heal the earth, the earth heals us." This spring, let's take action for life, for plants, and for the ecosystems we are all a part of. #BraidingSweetgrass #SpringEquinox #RobinWallKimmerer

  • We are honored to sponsor two nature-inspired films during the Sonoma International Flim Festival we think you will enjoy. 🌳Screening Thursday, March 20, 4:30pm Andrews Hall - “Wilding” is based on Isabella Tree’s best-selling book by the same title. It tells the story of a young couple that bets on nature for the future of their failing, four-hundred-year-old estate. After centuries of intensive farming, Charlie and Isabella Burrell decide to let the land go wild. The plan meets with resistance, but the results are transformative and inspiring. 🌎Screening Sunday, March 23, 1:30pm. Vets #2 - "Fools' Paradise (Lost?)” is a beautifully photographed, thought-provoking cinematic journey by Sonoma County-based filmmaker Alexandra Lexton. The eclectic cast of people who are, in profound ways, seeking to heal themselves and the planet by reconnecting with the natural world. The Sonoma International Film Festival (SIFF) is March 19-23. It showcases films that demonstrate excellence in storytelling and command of and a superior filmmaking. SIFF is committed to increasing gender parity and significant representation of underserved cultures and communities. • The science of fire is wildly complex, but Sonoma Land Trust uses science-backed strategies like prescribed burns to restore balance and reduce wildfire risks. In our March eNews, Stewardship Program Manager Joe Plaugher explained how by understanding the fire triangle—fuel, heat, and oxygen—and carefully considering conditions like weather and topography, we can bring “good fire” back to the land. “As a State-Certified Prescribed-Fire Burn Boss, I know firsthand that there is a lot to take in and process when it comes to bringing good fire back to the land. We approach this work carefully and methodically, knowing that it can be dangerous, but restoration of this natural process is too important not to do.” –Joe Plaugher Curious about the science behind fire behavior? • While wildfires have reshaped Sonoma County and California, Healdsburg resident John Mills is changing how communities respond. As the co-founder of Watch Duty—a nonprofit providing a real-time fire intelligence platform— Mills has revolutionized wildfire communication, turning fear into informed action. Not only has Watch Duty become an essential tool for residents and first responders during wildfires, but it is also becoming a tool for communicating about prescribed burns. By integrating prescribed burn alerts alongside wildfire updates, the platform communicates about fire activity with clarity and transparency, which helps ease public fears about fire.
