One of the biggest challenges veteran candidates face is connecting their military experience to the civilian sector. Here are best practices for successfully interviewing military veteran candidates for hiring managers and HR/TA professionals. Before the Interview 1. Understand Their MOS or Rating -Do some quick research on their military job title (e.g., 91B Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic or 92A Quartermaster). -Don’t get too caught up in acronyms or job titles. Focus on what they did — leadership, logistics, technical work, team coordination, etc. 2. Prep the Interview Team -Brief hiring managers on how military experience may not look like a traditional resume — but it often includes leadership, accountability, and fast learning curves. 3. During the Interview -Break the Ice with Simple, Clear Questions -Avoid jargon or overly abstract culture questions. Examples: -“Can you walk me through a typical day in your last role?” -“Tell me about a time you had to solve a problem under pressure.” Ask About Transferable Skills, Not Just Industry Experience Many military candidates haven’t worked in a corporate setting, but they’ve managed people, handled equipment, and executed missions with precision. 4. Focus on Behavioral Examples Use STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) and prompt them with structure: -“What was your objective?” -“What steps did you take?” -“What was the outcome?” 5. Be Mindful of Communication Differences -Veterans may use direct, formal, or mission-oriented language. That’s not a lack of soft skills — just a different communication style. 6. After the Interview -Don’t Penalize for Lack of Corporate Buzzwords -Look for capability and character — many vets just need a foot in the door and ramp up quickly. 7. Provide Clear Next Steps -Military candidates often appreciate structure — letting them know what to expect builds trust. 🚀 Bonus Tip: Ask These Great Veteran-Friendly Questions -“What’s a situation where you had to lead a team through uncertainty?” -“How did you adapt when your mission changed suddenly?” -“Tell me about maintaining equipment or systems under tight deadlines.” Connect with us here at Sergeant Talent Partners to talk about how to put together a military veteran recruitment strategy that works for your company! #sergeanttalentpartners #militarytransition #militaryhiring #interviewprep

Military Veterans in Supply Chain and Logistics ----> Transitioning from military service to civilian careers can be challenging, yet one field where veterans consistently excel is supply chain and logistics. Their military experience often involves managing complex operations, coordinating resources under pressure, and ensuring timely delivery—skills directly transferable to the logistics sector. In the military, roles such as logistics officers and supply specialists require meticulous planning, adaptability, and leadership. These professionals are adept at overseeing large-scale supply chains, managing inventories, and optimizing transportation routes—all critical components in civilian logistics operations. Employers seeking skilled professionals for supply chain roles should recognize the value veterans bring to the table. Their hands-on experience in logistics, combined with a mission-focused mindset, makes them well-suited for positions ranging from supply chain analysts to operations managers. For veterans exploring career opportunities, the logistics sector offers a promising path where their unique skill sets are not only applicable but highly sought after. By bridging the gap between military experience and civilian employment, we can create a workforce that leverages the strengths of those who have served. Bridging the Skilled Trades Gap with Military Talent 🛠️ The skilled trades industry is facing a growing labor shortage as experienced workers retire and fewer individuals enter these critical fields. Manufacturing, maintenance, logistics, and power generation—industries that keep our infrastructure running—are all feeling the strain. One untapped solution? Transitioning military veterans. Service members bring hands-on technical expertise, discipline, and adaptability, often in high-pressure environments. Many have backgrounds in machining, power generation, electrical systems, welding, HVAC, and heavy equipment repair—exactly the skills that today’s workforce needs. Companies looking to close the talent gap should prioritize military hiring initiatives, implement veteran apprenticeship programs, and recognize the value of military experience even when it doesn’t align 1:1 with traditional job titles. The skilled trades workforce isn’t just shrinking—it’s evolving. It’s time for companies to embrace new pipelines and recognize that veterans aren’t just a good fit—they're an essential part of the solution. Is your company leveraging veteran talent to fill the skilled trades gap? Connect with us at Sergeant Talent Partners to talk about implementing a strategy that works for your company. #SkilledTrades #Veterans #HiringSolutions #WorkforceDevelopment
