FAI has launched a new tilapia welfare app in Kenya, and it's a big move for local aquaculture. The app is designed to help fish farmers monitor and improve conditions on their farms — things like water quality, feeding practices, and fish behavior — all in one place. By giving farmers better tools and real-time insights, it’s not just about improving fish welfare (though that's key); it’s also about making farms more productive and efficient. The app is part of a wider project that includes hands-on training and support, so it's not just tech dropped from above — it's being introduced with the local context in mind. If it’s widely adopted, this could be a real game changer for responsible fish farming in Kenya. Scientists in Canada are utilizing smolt wheels—large rotating drums placed in rivers—to monitor Atlantic salmon migration and assess river health. These devices capture young salmon, known as smolts, as they migrate downstream, providing valuable data on population size, growth rates, and migration patterns. This information is crucial for evaluating the effectiveness of conservation and restoration efforts. In spring 2024, a smolt wheel was installed for the first time in Newfoundland's Terra Nova River as part of the Atlantic Salmon Federation's Wild Salmon Watersheds program. This initiative aims to protect and restore healthy watersheds to support long-term salmon populations. The data collected from the smolt wheel helps scientists understand smolt productivity, migration routes, and survival rates, informing strategies to improve and sustain salmon populations. The Co-op, one of the UK's largest supermarket chains, has committed to eliminating eyestalk ablation in its shrimp supply chain and implementing electrical stunning at harvest sites by the end of 2027. This decision, aimed at improving animal welfare standards in aquaculture, aligns Co-op with other UK retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Marks and Spencer, Ocado Group, and Waitrose & Partners which have already pledged to phase out both practices. Aquaculture is a vital component of global food security but faces significant challenges due to aquaculture-specific diseases that devastate marine farms. Marine farms urgently need reliable, affordable and easy-to-use field tests to strengthen food security. To address the global lack of accurate and user-friendly testing, Seek Labs developed the SeekIt™ platform, a novel point-of-care molecular diagnostic platform. SeekIt detects a wide variety of viral, bacterial, or parasitic pathogens in 30 minutes or less, from sample collection to result, at room temperature. Learn more about SeekIt™ and an internal validation study they performed ⬇️

A recent study led by researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the University of Copenhagen, and the University of Montreal has found that diets rich in plant-based foods, complemented by fish consumption and low in ultra-processed items, are associated with healthier aging. Tracking over 105,000 adults aged 39 to 69 for 30 years, the study revealed that individuals adhering to such dietary patterns were more likely to reach age 70 free of major chronic diseases, maintaining cognitive, physical, and mental health.
