Today we'd like to honor WWII veteran Edward Burke. Ed served in the Battle of the Bulge and was a Company Commander with a tank Destroyer Unit attached to the 29th infantry division. He was awarded more than 10 combat medals, citations, and awards, including the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry, which is one of the highest combat decorations given by the United States. He was also awarded the Bronze Star Medal and five Bronze Campaign Stars for battles in D-Day Normandy, Brittany, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. When Ed returned home in 1946, he married five days later. He and his wife raised five children together and today have more than 20 grandchildren. He finished law school at the University of Cincinnati College of Law and worked as a real estate lawyer until he was 87. Burke returned to the battle sites in Europe many times over the years, paying his respects to the soldiers who didn’t make it home. Edward is connected to SABG through our Deputy Program Manager Phil Jolly and the Green Township VFW Post 10380 in Cincinnati. He was 104 when he passed away last year.
