Magnets are in nearly everything around us – from your smartphone to your car and even your dishwasher. These magnets contain valuable materials called rare earth elements, that are critical for modern technology. However, despite their importance, less than 5% of these magnets are recycled when they break or become obsolete. This is where the HARMONY project comes in. At HARMONY, we are developing innovative solutions to improve rare earth magnet recycling, keeping these critical materials in use and contributing to a sustainable, circular economy in the EU. By applying Life Cycle Assessment (#LCA), we evaluate the environmental, economic, and social impacts of different recycling methods, ensuring they are both effective and resource-efficient. Exceptionally low carbon footprint confirmed for #HyProMag NdFeB #RareEarth products - approximate 95% reduction of CO2-eq emissions versus primary mine to magnet production Minviro has completed an independent, Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) analysis in accordance with ISO 14067:2018 for #HyProMagUSA, which is developing a major new domestic source of recycled rare earth permanent magnets in Texas, United States. PCF of 2.35 kg of CO2 eq. per kg of NdFeB cut sintered block product for the #HyProMagUSA Feasibility Study base case scenario of 750tpa NdFeB magnets and 291tpa associated NdFeB co-products. PCF of 0.38 kg of CO2 eq. per kg of associated NdFeB alloy powder, which is a co-product produced by #HyProMagUSA The project is underpinned by the patented Hydrogen Processing of Magnet Scrap (HPMS) technology developed by the Magnetic Materials Group at University of Birmingham and being commercialized by HyProMag Ltd in United Kingdom (2025), HyProMag GmbH in Germany (2025) and #HyProMagUSA in the United States (2027). HPMS is exclusively licenced to HyProMag by University of Birmingham. HyProMag is supported by the Minerals Security Partnership. HPMS has major competitive advantages versus other rare earth magnet recycling technologies, which are largely focused on chemical processes: -HPMS solves the challenges of liberating embedded magnets from end-of-life scrap streams -HPMS facilitates short-loop recycling producing a higher value added NdFeB magnet product with significantly reduced CO2 footprint, as opposed to an oxide or mixed carbonate #HyProMagUSA is a 50:50 joint venture company owned by CoTec Corp. and Maginito. Maginito is 79.4% owned by Mkango Resources Ltd. and 20.6% owned by CoTec Corp.
