A few weeks ago Jared Friedman asked me to come speak to the current Y Combinator batch! Honestly the imposter syndrome was real - having seen so many incredible founders speak during our time at YC, I was pretty nervous! In the end we ended up having a lot of fun - mostly thanks to Tony Kam and his incredible Lilac Labs demos. Selling to hospitals is hard, especially as a startup offering a brand-new capability. It was great to meet some of the young health startups in the current batch, and really gratifying to share the few learnings we’ve been able to eke out at Pharos (YC S24). Wishing you luck at Demo Day tomorrow W25! I was terrified, but it’s definitely Type 2 fun.

Pharos (YC S24) is at the International Stroke Conference this week! We’re excited to help teams automate abstraction for GWTG, process adherence steps and more - showing you where lifesaving minutes can be saved. … and I for one am looking forward to more conferences providing emotional support huskies - definitely great for my heart health. So grateful to Helen Burstin and the amazing team at the Council of Medical Specialty Societies for inviting us to Chicago last month. The event was incredible, and we were excited to introduce the automated quality reporting and unstructured chart abstraction enabled by Pharos (YC S24) to the leading minds in clinical quality. Pharos (YC S24) has just raised $5M in seed funding to automate hospital quality reporting and help staff identify the root causes of avoidable harm. Their AI automates abstraction of quality registry variables, process adherence measures and patient safety indicators, extracting values from structured and unstructured medical data. As well as automating retrospective reporting, Pharos extracts data from patient journeys live, helping quality teams take action on issues like sepsis mortality, hospital acquired infections and pressure ulcers. Pharos is a mission driven team of clinicians and AI researchers from Meta, J.P. Morgan and Orion Health. They recently raised funding from Felicis, Moxxie, General Catalyst and Y Combinator to enable hospital quality teams with AI. Matthew, Alex and I are incredibly excited to announce that we’ve raised $5M to kickstart Pharos (YC S24)! We’re building AI to help the teams responsible for patient safety in hospitals - automating complex manual reporting and showing them where and why avoidable harm is happening. Matthew Jones and I have been deploying AI into hospitals for more than five years. We’ve always believed that AI has huge potential to protect patients and free up clinical time, and over the years, it became clear to us that hospital quality teams are best placed to realize that potential. When Alex Clarke joined the team, he helped us understand how hard it is for those teams to get value from data today. As an MD, he saw thousands of clinical hours spent on chart abstraction for reporting and quality improvement. Even with all that work, teams see data for a small subset of their patient population and get that data weeks after patient discharge. Our mission is to unlock the power of data for hospital quality teams, giving them back time and helping them protect patients. Pharos uses AI to pull quality registry variables, process adherence measures and patient safety indicators from structured and unstructured medical data. We automate the reporting they spend so much time on today and let them measure what’s happening live instead of waiting weeks for manual abstraction.
