Across the OMV Group, we are committed to advancing the circular economy at every stage in the plastics lifecycle, working all along the value chain. Chemical recycling targets hard-to-recycle plastics that can’t currently be mechanically recycled and is capable of producing polymers of virgin quality, it is therefore a vital complement to mechanical recycling. This complementary approach enables the plastic value chain to become circular and helps stakeholders throughout the process to achieve their sustainability targets. In this video Karina Schneider from #OMV and Stephan Roest from Borealis explain how ReOil® turns end-of-life plastics into high-quality circular feedstock for the production of chemicals.

#Recycling offers the opportunity to give end-of-life plastic a second life In an ideal world, it all begins with pre-sorting, with every household sorting their recyclable waste into different bins according to material, ready to be collected and taken to facilities for further sorting and recycling. However, this process varies from country to country and even from region to region, depending on local regulations, available infrastructure and services, and consumer behavior. Discover in our latest #OMV article from industry experts from TOMRA and Reclay, why collecting and sorting waste is the first step in recycling and why this is so important.

Scaling up chemical recycling On March 20 we unveiled our innovative ReOil plant which transforms end-of-life plastics into circular feedstocks. Today, here’s everything you need to know about #OMV’s new ReOil plant. Humans produce 350 mn t of plastic waste each year. That’s more than the weight of every person on Earth put together. But just 9% is currently recycled. Our ReOil technology offers a new way to tackle hard-to-recycle plastic, breaking it down into circular chemicals that can be fed back into new plastic production. Here’s how the technology works and why it’s an important development in the wider push towards a #circulareconomy. #ForwardforGood

Today we have announced a significant milestone in the chemical industry following 15 years of pioneering research and development. We have started-up the next-scale expansion of our innovative proprietary ReOil® technology at the Schwechat refinery near Vienna. Our new plant can process 16,000 metric tons of hard-to-recycle mixed plastic waste annually - equivalent to the annual plastic waste generated by 160,000 Austrian households. The resulting pyrolysis oil serves as a raw material for the production of sustainable base chemicals, which are then utilized in various everyday applications, including food packaging, healthcare products, and components for electric vehicles. In 2030, a 34% reduction of CO2 can be achieved if post-consumer mixed plastic waste is chemically recycled in the ReOil plant instead of being incinerated. #ForwardforGood #OMV Read more in our press release: https://lnkd.in/eVYjjztK
