NYPA is the nation's largest state power organization, serving government, not-for-profit, and business customers.

About us

The New York Power Authority is the nation's largest state public power organization, with 17 generating facilities and more than 1,550 circuit-miles of transmission lines. More than 70 percent of the electricity we produce is clean renewable hydropower. NYPA is a leader in promoting energy efficiency, new energy technologies and electric transportation initiatives. Our lower-cost power production and electricity purchases support hundreds of thousands of jobs throughout the state. Our business customers range from Fortune 100 giants competing in international markets to small manufacturing or service firms that are vital to local economies. We sell power to government agencies; to community-owned electric systems and rural electric cooperatives; to job-producing companies; to private utilities for resale—without profit—to their customers; and to neighboring states, under federal requirements. • This morning, Hossein Hooshyar, Director of our Advanced Grid Innovation Laboratory for Energy (AGILe), delivered an exciting presentation & several case studies at the final day of Infocast's #NYEnergySummit.   The session, "Accelerating the Adoption of Innovative Technologies to Benefit the Electric Grid," provided deep insights into AGILe's role in advancing the future of energy through cutting-edge research and real-time solutions. Our AGILe lab offers a state-of-the-art testing environment designed to tackle the challenges of creating a reliable, affordable, and low-carbon power grid.   Case study highlights included: • Behind-the-Meter DERs as Grid Assets: A look into how distributed energy resources (DERs) can be leveraged to support grid stability. • Real-Time Tracking of Cyber Anomalies in Power Systems: Addressing the critical need for cybersecurity in an increasingly connected grid. • Real-Time Health Monitoring of Instrument Transformers: Innovative approaches to maintaining grid infrastructure in real time.   We're excited to continue to drive innovation and pave the way for a more sustainable energy future!

  • We were back at Infocast’s NY Energy Summit in Albany yesterday for the second day of insightful discussions, where Girish Behal PMP, VP of Projects and Business Development, and Vennela Yadhati, P.E., VP of Renewables, shared their energy and expertise at the event. Girish participated in the "New Developments in Transmission Planning and Renewables Integration" panel. The session focused on the evolving landscape of New York’s transmission planning and how utilities are addressing future system needs in light of decarbonization and increasing demand. He highlighted NYPA’s leading role in building new transmission upstate and downstate that will reduce congestion and open energy pathways. Vennela contributed to the "Utility-Scale Onshore Wind and Solar Expansion" panel. This discussion explored the challenges and opportunities in large-scale energy development across New York, with a special focus on advancing near-term projects. Vennela and other experts dove into the issues impacting project economics, including transmission infrastructure investment, and supply chain challenges. She also underscored the importance of collaboration to address workforce, siting, and permitting challenges in the evolving energy landscape.   Thank you to all attendees who heard from or spoke with Girish, Vennela, and other NYPA representatives this week to discuss the work ahead as we shape New York’s energy transition.
