Powering NYC, Westchester, and leading the clean energy transition.

About us

We provide power to more than 10 million people and businesses across NYC and Westchester. Reliability and accessibility are central to what we do and how we provide energy service. Leading the industry to power tomorrow is our other focus- we are committed to aggressively transitioning away from fossil fuels to a net-zero economy by 2050. To help achieve this we collaborate with customers, regulators, policymakers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure our clean energy future is informed by principles of affordability, equity, and environmental justice. We’re also heavily investing in new technologies and the infrastructure that can get us there. What are a few things we have achieved so far? • Since 2009, our energy efficiency programs have prevented 11 million metric tons of carbon emissions – the same amount it would take to power 1.4 million homes for a year • Recently, we’ve embarked on an 8-year project to make our systems more resilient in the face of extreme weather events

  • Our steam system powers the lives of 3 million people who pass through, live in, or work in buildings that use our steam system. Steam is used for heating and hot water for some of NY’s largest and most iconic buildings like the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings, the Guggenheim Museum, the United Nations, and Grand Central Terminal. Hear our President Matt Ketschke speak about our pilot to decarbonize this system. Since 2005, we've reduced CO2 emissions by 60% through using lower carbon fuels, enhancing efficiency, and deploying new technologies.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our conversation with Con Edison President Matthew Ketschke on decarbonizing NYC's district steam system—the largest in the country! Energy upgrades would impact more than 3 million New Yorkers who rely on the steam heating used in over 1,500 buildings in Manhattan, from the Financial District to 96th Street. Our CEO Tim Cawley recently had a conversation with Global Listed Infrastructure Organisation (GLIO) on a range of topics including our significant investments in NYC's infrastructure, what it takes to operate and maintain a complex system, and why safety, reliability and clean energy remain core to our business strategy and matter to our shareholders.  Their discussion also touched on our 200-year journey from using oil to light the streetlights of New York City, to present day where we provide steam, electric and gas services to 9 million people —operating the largest steam system in the US and largest underground system globally —to being the oldest continuously listed stock on the New York Stock Exchange.   Our company history and our service territory has shaped our focus on providing safe, reliable power and increasing electric and renewable energy to meet our customers’ energy demand. Over the next two decades, we're set to make substantial investments to ensure safety, reliability, and a sustainable future. We’re committed to reliability: We are nine times more reliable than the average utility. This means that while the national average for power outages is once a year our customers on average experience such disruptions only once every nine years nine years. We’re making infrastructure Investments:  To support electrification of major transportation networks including JFK airport, serving local neighborhoods as they electrify building heating, and facilitating the electrification of the MTA’s bus fleets via their area hub. These robust investments are not only crucial for our infrastructure and the future of our service territory but also drive our stock and dividend reliability.  We’re looking to the future: Our strategy helps ensure we can meet our customers’ needs today and in the future.  Electric vehicles, heating, and building electrification are all major drivers of growth.  We're committed to building infrastructure to reliably meet this growing demand for electric, which is projected to increase by 80% over the next three decades. Since Super Storm Sandy, we've invested over $1 billion in system resilience. Through efforts such as flood walls, undergrounding, and smart switches, 1.2 million outages were avoided. This is the kind of futureproofing we plan to continue.  We’re focused on affordability: Our energy affordability programs are being expanded through increased funding and enrolling more customers. We also offer various energy efficiency programs that offer rebates and incentives for electrification upgrades. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/eQh89M_F
