The end of the USDA’s Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) program presents an unprecedented challenge for Maryland’s small farms and food banks. This initiative provided fresh, locally grown food at a fraction of retail costs—ensuring families in need had access to nutritious meals while also supporting Maryland farmers. With the loss of this vital program, Maryland farmers are losing a key buyer, and the disappearance of millions in funding will significantly reduce fresh food options for food-insecure communities. The loss of the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program (LFPA) is a devastating blow to our food system here in Maryland. Maryland Food Bank COO Meg Kimmel shares how this funding cut will reduce access to fresh produce and seafood for families in need and impact local farmers and food producers who relied on the program. Between 2023 and 2024, LFPA funding allowed us to distribute 5.6 million meals worth of fresh, locally sourced food.
