Exciting news for the Lithios team! We’re excited to share that we’ve been awarded a $249,660 grant from the MassCEC AmplifyMass program. This grant provides additional funding on top of our ARPA-E SPARKS award, the funds from which we'll use to develop the first field-deployable pilot system for our Advanced Lithium Extraction (ALE) technology. We’re grateful to the MassCEC for their support in advancing energy innovation in Massachusetts. A big thank you to our team and partners—we’re looking forward to the work ahead! https://lnkd.in/eVSGWmD3 #Cleantech #Innovation #Sustainability #MassCEC #EnergyTransition

Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly transforming the global automotive landscape, and they rely on lithium-ion batteries to power their engines. Some forecasts suggest that by 2030, EVs could account for nearly 50% of global car sales. But have you ever wondered where the lithium powering these vehicles comes from? Approximately 60% of the world’s lithium is extracted from hard-rock deposits, while the remaining 40% is sourced from brine pools. Traditional brine extraction involves vast evaporation ponds that can stretch for miles, relying on the sun to slowly extract lithium over extended periods, consuming significant amounts of water in the process. However, innovative approaches are emerging to make lithium extraction more efficient and environmentally friendly. Companies like Lithios, led by CEO Mohammad A. Alkhadra, are addressing this challenge head-on. Instead of relying on evaporation and chemicals, Lithios utilizes electricity to extract lithium directly from brines. Think of it as a giant lithium magnet—an electrochemical process that pulls lithium out with precision, speed, and efficiency while using far less water. This approach could be a game-changer: • Access to Low-Grade Brines – Enhanced extraction technologies may enable the economical use of previously non-viable lithium sources. • Reduced Environmental Impact – More efficient processes can minimize water usage and ecological disruption. • Meeting Rising Demand – Improved extraction methods can help align lithium supply with the escalating demand from the EV market. While the transition to these new technologies won’t happen overnight, it’s clear that innovation in lithium extraction is as crucial as advancements in how we utilize this vital resource. In the attached photo, you can see vast lithium brine pools, each typically covering an area of 2 to 4 square kilometers - equivalent to hundreds of football fields. If you want to learn more, I had a very interesting conversation with Mohammad A. Alkhadra, the CEO of Lithios, and I'll share a link to the full interview in the comments.

After securing our first investment in the direct lithium extraction (DLE) tech company, Lithios, we are already collaborating with this promising startup. Lithios is developing an innovative electrochemical platform to produce sustainable, low-cost lithium from untapped resources. We visited Tecpetrol's plant in Olacapato, located 3,800 meters above sea level in the heart of Argentina’s Puna, in Salta province. It was a fantastic trip, alongside Oscar Turner, Mohammad A. Alkhadra and Tomás Rauch, as we focused on scaling Lithios’ technology. We’re excited to explore synergies and growth opportunities within our Group. Together, we’re paving the way for a future of more efficient and sustainable lithium production!
