Our new article in Matter by Cell Press titled "Layer-by-layer mechanism of the MAX phase to MXene transformation" describes a very important study conducted by Mark Anayee, Ruocun Wang, Stefano Ippolito, Marley Downes that reveals the mechanism of the selective wet chemical etching of MAX phases. The lessons learned: #MXenes are formed layer-by-layer. If you etch MAX completely to achieve 100% yield, you overetch the nanosheets formed initially. This shows a pathway to producing very large MXene flakes. The reaction kinetics and rate-controlling steps depend on the MAX structure and composition.
