This renovated traditional-style home on Lake Washington features a pool, fountain, spa, multiple terraces, a fire feature, and a back garden brightly planted with Astilbe x arendsii `Amethyst`, geraniums, and a variety of grasses. The design creates a series of outdoor spaces to provide varying experiences at multiple levels from the upper terraces of the house down to the lakefront and boat dock. Throughout the expanse of the new Waterfront Park and Overlook Walk, Land Morphology’s design includes an array of 500 plant varieties and nearly 800 trees, creating distinct zones that enhance the visitor experience through color, texture, and seasonal change. Each planting zone across Overlook Walk and the Waterfront Promenade tells a unique story rooted in local history and ecology. For Overlook Walk, the use of resilient plantings native to Puget Sound’s coastal bluffs brings a naturalistic feel, while also providing valuable shade, habitat, and stormwater filtration. The Aquarium Rooftop features a native meadow landscape designed with guidance from traditional ecological knowledge-keeper Valerie Segrest. Land Morphology provided planting design services for the project, collaborating with the urban design lead, Field Operations for this City of Seattle project. At Shore Blocks, a section of the existing concrete bulkhead was removed to create a people and fish-friendly pocket beach; forms in the landscape echo the rectangular shapes seen throughout the architecture of the residence and meet the functional needs of the nearshore ecosystem. The honed blocks of locally sourced stone placed on the beach and in the water attenuate wave action at different water levels and provide spaces for lounging and playing at the water’s edge.
