Our JERA Americas Office Safety Committee was proud to host Houston Fire Department #Firefighter, Ronnie Harrison, on Tuesday, to discuss fire safety preparedness at home and at work. Harrison has served 31 years with #HFD and we thank him for his service to our city, and for stopping by to teach us more about fire safety. HFD makes more than 150,000 fire calls per year and more than 350,000 EMS calls per year, he said. So, here are 15 tips Ronnie shared with our #JAM team to help us all better prepare for an #emergency. TIPS: ▶Most fires happen between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. when most are sleeping. Have a fire plan, especially when children or elderly residents are in the home. ▶Have an established "meeting place" identified in your fire plan, somewhere out front and visible to firefighters, so no one goes back into a burning building searching for missing family members or pets. ▶Test all windows as part of your escape plan. Make sure they open. Fire escape ladders for second floors can be purchased on Amazon. ▶Have a working smoke alarm installed in each bedroom and area of the home and test them monthly. Check the batteries. ▶Replace fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors about every 10 years. ▶Remember to teach and condition children to respond to fire alarm noise with an emergency sentiment, even when the alarm goes off by accident or while cooking, so they learn to take the sound seriously. That way, if it goes off in a real fire, they won't assume it's a cooking mishap. ▶If you notice your plugs or cords are warm when you plug them into the electrical outlet, or notice your lights flicker or dim in the home, it may be time for an electrician to come out for a safety check. ▶If you have a gas appliance in the home, like a gas stove or water heater, something with a pilot light, you need a carbon monoxide detector. ▶Carbon monoxide exposure can't be seen or smelled, but can trigger headaches, nausea, dizziness, and disorientation. ▶Know where your fire extinguishers are and routinely check the pressure. ▶When using a fire extinguisher, remember to PASS (pull the pin, aim, squeeze, and sweep). When spraying the extinguisher, aim at the base or source, of the fire, not the flames. ▶In less than 90 seconds, a small fire can consume a room. ▶Most fire fatalities are from smoke inhalation, not the fire. ▶If a fire breaks out in a high-rise building, it may require one-third or half of firefighter personnel to combat. So, if smoke breaks out in a hotel or office building, don't wait for fire rescue to get out of the building. ▶If in a high-rise and the fire is above you, go down to find a safe exit. If the fire is below, you may have to go up to the roof and signal for help. Wherever you are, always know where the building exits are. *If you live in #Houston, visit [https://lnkd.in/giXH7tBZ] to learn more about HFD's free fire alarm program. #FireDepartment #Service #Safety #ServeandProtect #EMS #PublicSafety #FirstResponders
