We're thrilled to work with Charlie and Jacob at Hexium Inc, which uses lasers to enrich lithium for fission & fusion reactors. The diligence process for this one was fun: we introduced Charlie to a few nuclear experts. Most went into calls saying "this'll never work" and returned saying "wow, this'll work." 🤣 The round was a great syndicate with our friends at Refactor, MaC Venture Capital, R7, Julian Capital, and many other amazing folks. https://lnkd.in/eM5CbnnJ

We're super excited to announce our new $40m fund, Humba Ventures II! Our singular focus is backing early-stage founders building ambitious deep tech and American Dynamism companies. After running Humba Ventures for three years, we continue to believe that building and investing in advanced technologies and critical sectors is more important than ever. Companies can have a huge impact while benefiting from incredible funding and recruiting opportunities. This wasn’t the case a decade ago, when most deep tech founders came from academia, and few VCs were willing to back them. Today, founders and early hires are spinning out from companies like SpaceX and Palantir, and VCs have their checkbooks ready. There's also been a misconception that deep tech is very capital intensive. That may have been true 10+ years ago but the costs of fundamental technologies like gene sequencing and sensors have plummeted, allowing talented teams to accomplish A LOT with a typical seed round. We're excited to double down on these teams with our $40m fund. We've already been fortunate enough to partner with companies like Mytra, Antares, and Northwood, and we're eager to meet other ambitious teams. We are excited to announce our $30M Series A fundraise, led by Alt Capital and Caffeinated Capital, to accelerate the demonstration of our first microreactor. Since raising our seed round a year ago, we’ve finalized our core design, demonstrated our first heat pipe, machined graphite for our core, kicked off power conversion and control systems designs, joined INL’s front end engineering and experiment design (FEEED) program, and won $4.3M in DOD and DOE funding. We plan to use this round of capital to expand our R&D and manufacturing capabilities and complete our first electrically-heated demonstration unit, scheduled for completion in early 2025. Thanks to our new and existing investors for their support, including Shine Capital, BoxGroup, Alice Lloyd George, Shrug Capital, Uncommon Capital, Banter Capital, as well as national laboratory partners including Idaho National Laboratory, Savannah River National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories. Humba Ventures is very excited to be an investor in Eyebot, and to work with Matthias, Jack, and team. Eyebot is building easy-to-deploy vision testing kiosks that will democratize access to vision care and eyewear prescriptions. Pretty soon we'll all be able to do an eye test in 2 minutes at a mall or store instead of waiting weeks to see an optometrist! 👓
