About us

In 1944, Heifer International’s founder, Dan West, began outlining a simple but groundbreaking plan to tackle hunger around the world. West, a farmer from the Midwest and Church of the Brethren member, had recently returned from feeding weary refugees during volunteer service in the Spanish Civil War. He had seen firsthand that giving people food was a short-term solution, whereas providing them with animals offered a steady supply of nutritious food for an entire family. His philosophy still inspires Heifer’s work today. Partnering with farmers across a range of different livestock and crops, we create unique solutions to local challenges. Today, Heifer International has operations in 19 countries around the world, working alongside local farmers, business owners and their communities, as they mobilize and envision their futures. Together, we build inclusive, resilient economies, so communities can develop effective ways to end global hunger and poverty in a sustainable way. To date, we have supported more than 52 million farming families across Africa, Asia and the Americas and in the past five years alone, we have worked alongside 2.7 million families to close the living income gap or set them on a path to doing so. Between now and 2030, we will support an additional 10 million people to reach a living income by scaling up our signature programs. To achieve this, Heifer International relies on its passionate, committed and highly skilled staff.

  • 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 Heifer International Kenya — 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢. We are proud to officially launch the Practice for Change (P4C) Signature Program in Nairobi — a bold, collaborative initiative designed to support 625,000 smallholder farming households across 26 counties in achieving a sustainable living income by 2030. As shared by our President and CEO Surita Sandosham, this milestone reflects more than a program launch — it represents our deep commitment to locally led, inclusive rural development that centers the voices and leadership of women and youth, and builds pathways for a thriving agricultural economy. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: Agriculture is the backbone of Kenya’s economy — yet many smallholder farmers continue to face limited access to markets, finance, technology, and climate-resilient infrastructure. The P4C approach meets these challenges head-on through: 🔹 A systems approach to market development 🔹 Targeting key value chains: poultry, dairy, red meat, and horticulture 🔹 Strengthening farmer organizations’ governance and financial capacity 🔹 Practical training and access to finance, inputs, and digital tools 🔹 Promoting climate-smart, environmentally responsible farming 🔹 Elevating women and youth as drivers of agri-business innovation Partnerships are at the heart of P4C. With over $95 million expected to be mobilized through Heifer’s resources and co-investment with donors, public institutions, and the private sector, we are creating shared value through collective action. We’re grateful to our partners in national and county governments, farmer cooperatives, development agencies, and businesses who are walking this journey with us. This is not a program designed for farmers — it is designed with farmers. Because we believe in their strength, their resilience, and their power to lead the transformation of food systems across Kenya and beyond. Heifer International is here to stay — committed to walking alongside Kenya’s rural communities, ensuring they have the tools, resources, and support to thrive with dignity and pride. Together, we’re building a future where agriculture is not just a livelihood — 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲. #PracticeForChange #HeiferInternational #KenyaAgriculture #SmallholderFarmers #ClimateSmartAg #YouthInAg #WomenInAg #LivingIncome #FoodSystemsTransformation #P4C

Celebrating Earth Month with my story about US growers practicing sustainable, regenerative farming in the Department of Agriculture's special edition published by USA TODAY / Studio Gannett. Insightful interviews include Robert Bonnie, former under-secretary for farm production and conservation at the USDA; Director of Regeneration Donna Kilpatrick of Heifer Ranch Center of Regenerative Agriculture in Arkansas; and Suzanne Hunt, co-owner of her seventh generation family farm and sustainable certified winery Hunt Country Vineyards in New York's Finger Lakes . Publication link: https://lnkd.in/gYUVUUTc I'm a down to earth Midwestern woman. Born. Raised. Living in our nation's Heartland. I love writing about anything and everything agriculture world-wide -- from today's resilient growers' future-focused farming methods and Indigenous people's ancestral agricultural practices, to sustainable agritourism initiatives, climate-smart agritech, ag history, and Mother Nature's power to teach us how to responsibly live off and with her land. While writing this piece, I learned a lot digging into successful, science-proven regenerative agricultural and ranching practices. Sidebar: As a freelance journalist, you never know when a story research trip sprouts into a solid, meaningful storytelling opportunity. Last spring, I joined the GLP Films crew in New York's Finger Lakes communities as they filmed a sustainable tourism video project for the Finger Lakes Regional Tourism Council. That's when I met Suzanne and her husband Matt, co-owners of Hunt Country Vineyards. In climate-vulnerable southwest #Bangladesh, where rising seas and erratic rains threaten crops and livelihoods, Mosammat Laboni Khatun is growing sustainable solutions. Facing poor soil, chemical-heavy farming and limited freedom as a young woman, she joined the Bijoy Nagar Nari Unnayan Women Cooperative. She reshaped her one-third acre land into a model for climate-smart agriculture. Through the co-op, she received training on safe vegetable production, financial management and cooperative leadership, along with a loan for climate-resilient seeds and connections to buyers. Increasing her income by more than 50 percent, she now teaches others to farm without chemicals. “If everyone farms this way and everyone’s income increases, we all can live better, and in this way, our environment is also helped,” she said. 🔗 Read her story: https://bit.ly/4cw40Cs. #ClimateAction #WomenInAg #Coops4Dev #SustainableFarming #EarthDay2025 Heifer International Bangladesh Heifer International Nurun Nahar

After facing challenges in the city trying to support her family, Sushmita returned home — not to retreat, but to rise. Through Heifer’s CAVE (Community Agro-Vet Entrepreneur) training, she became one of the few women in her village certified to provide veterinary care. Now she splits her time between her bustling goat farm and traveling from home to home, helping farmers keep their animals healthy and their livelihoods strong. “𝑆ℎ𝑒’𝑠 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑑 ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑒 𝑤𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛 𝑖𝑛 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑣𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑔𝑒,” says her proud mother-in-law, Mina Kumari. On Monday, Heifer International President & CEO Surita Sandosham joined a High-Level Roundtable on Innovations and Partnerships for Food Security, where she highlighted real-world success stories in climate-smart agriculture from across Africa. "At Heifer International, we walk alongside the smallholder farmers on the front lines of climate change,” Surita said. She shared Heifer’s work in Kenya, where 625,000 farmers have been supported in achieving sustainable living incomes through training aligned with national efforts to transform 2 million households from food deficit to food surplus producers. In Nigeria, Heifer’s innovative financing models with youth entrepreneurs—like pay-at-harvest insurance for maize and rice farmers—are making farming more resilient. Through partnerships with Pula Advisors and Thrive Agric, over 40,000 farmers have improved productivity and doubled household incomes. Surita emphasized that lasting impact happens when science, local knowledge, and community leadership come together. And it’s not just in Africa. In Nepal, Heifer supports local governments and co-ops in livestock management. Farmers plant fodder trees to improve soil, feed animals, and prevent erosion, while trained community animal health workers provide vital services. In Guatemala, farmers practice agroforestry by planting trees with crops like coffee, cacao, and spices, improving biodiversity and creating new income streams. Across all regions, partnerships are the engine — connecting farmers with tools, training, markets, and climate-resilient practices. Events like CGIAR Science Week help elevate farmers’ voices and share tested, practical solutions that work. Heifer’s participation ensures that global food policies are grounded in on-the-ground realities.
