Last month, the DVGI celebrated its annual Student Night on Tuesday, March 25th at Villanova University! After a student poster session (accompanied by corporate sponsor tabling and a happy hour) and a delicious dinner, the evening’s program got started as DVGI recognized Ernest Hanna, P.E., of GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. as the ASCE Philadelphia Section’s 2024 Geotechnical Engineer of the Year. Ernie packed his short, sweet acceptance remarks with kernels of wisdom from his 40+ years as a geo-professional. DVGI congratulates Ernie on his well-deserved recognition and wishes him the best as he eases into his recently-announced retirement. 🎉 💡 Next, three student speakers presented capably on their research. Reza Jebeli, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Delaware, discussed his work on the impact of pore water salinity on clays’ stability and shear strength. Avinash Pandey, E.I.T, an M.S. student at Rowan University, reviewed his research on the potential use of LiDAR to evaluate frost heave in frigid climates. Finally, Catherine Sengstock, an M.S. student at Widener University, outlined her investigation into developing low-carbon cementitious materials using industrial byproducts. DVGI congratulates the student speakers and appreciates their ongoing contributions to the geotechnical profession. 🌟 Finally, the evening closed with the presentation of DVGI’s student scholarships. This year's DVGI scholarship winners included: Sarah Burghardt, EIT, Villanova University; Mohamad El Ahmad, Villanova University; Nasreldeen Hassan, Widener University; Jocelin Mayorga, Widener University; Maria McNicholas, Drexel University; Avinash Pandey, E.I.T, Rowan University; and Juan Pablo Zamora Beyk, Drexel University. DVGI congratulates these student winners and is proud to support them in their academic endeavors. DVGI thanks its sponsors, its student speakers and poster presenters, and its 2024 Geotechnical Engineer of the Year for making this year’s Student Night such a terrific event. We’re already looking forward to the next one! April 15 is Environmental Professionals Day! Environmental Professionals Day is an opportunity to thank the scientists, engineers, technicians, managers, experts, and others helping to support our natural world and build more sustainable communities. The work done every day by GZA's environmental professionals is critical to society's need to seamlessly harmonize the built and natural worlds for the benefit of humanity and the preservation of the environment. April 15 was chosen to celebrate the people working to make a cleaner and safer environment because it is also the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci, a visionary whose deep curiosity and scientific approach reflect the essence of environmental professionals. Thank you to all the people of GZA who are working hard every day to make our environment and our world a better place!

I am delighted to share that I have embarked on a new professional chapter as an Engineer I at GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. As I reflect on the path that has brought me here, I am profoundly grateful to the NJ Department of Environmental Protection Bureau of Dam Safety for the formative experiences that introduced me to the world of dam and levee engineering. My time at NJDEP was not only foundational in cultivating my technical acumen, but also transformative in helping me discover a deep-seated passion for infrastructure and the built environment. To have contributed, even in a small way, to such meaningful work has been both an honor and a privilege — leaving that role comes with a bittersweet mix of pride, gratitude, and reflection. Over the past several weeks at GZA, I’ve had the privilege of integrating into a team that balances technical rigor with a strong culture of collaboration. The Dams Group has already provided a meaningful space for growth, where each project presents a chance to expand my perspective and sharpen my engineering instincts. It’s been an energizing start, and I’m looking forward to deepening my engagement and continuing to contribute to the impactful work being done here. Sharing a few moments that capture the spirit of an unforgettable chapter — thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey so far. #CareerMilestone #DamEngineering #ProfessionalGrowth #GZA #Gratitude #EngineeringJourney #NewBeginnings
