Last month, the DVGI celebrated its annual Student Night on Tuesday, March 25th at Villanova University! After a student poster session (accompanied by corporate sponsor tabling and a happy hour) and a delicious dinner, the evening’s program got started as DVGI recognized Ernest Hanna, P.E., of GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. as the ASCE Philadelphia Section’s 2024 Geotechnical Engineer of the Year. Ernie packed his short, sweet acceptance remarks with kernels of wisdom from his 40+ years as a geo-professional. DVGI congratulates Ernie on his well-deserved recognition and wishes him the best as he eases into his recently-announced retirement. 🎉 💡 Next, three student speakers presented capably on their research. Reza Jebeli, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Delaware, discussed his work on the impact of pore water salinity on clays’ stability and shear strength. Avinash Pandey, E.I.T, an M.S. student at Rowan University, reviewed his research on the potential use of LiDAR to evaluate frost heave in frigid climates. Finally, Catherine Sengstock, an M.S. student at Widener University, outlined her investigation into developing low-carbon cementitious materials using industrial byproducts. DVGI congratulates the student speakers and appreciates their ongoing contributions to the geotechnical profession. 🌟 Finally, the evening closed with the presentation of DVGI’s student scholarships. This year's DVGI scholarship winners included: Sarah Burghardt, EIT, Villanova University; Mohamad El Ahmad, Villanova University; Nasreldeen Hassan, Widener University; Jocelin Mayorga, Widener University; Maria McNicholas, Drexel University; Avinash Pandey, E.I.T, Rowan University; and Juan Pablo Zamora Beyk, Drexel University. DVGI congratulates these student winners and is proud to support them in their academic endeavors. DVGI thanks its sponsors, its student speakers and poster presenters, and its 2024 Geotechnical Engineer of the Year for making this year’s Student Night such a terrific event. We’re already looking forward to the next one! I’m incredibly honored to be selected as a 2024–2025 Delaware Valley Geo-Institute (DVGI) Student Scholarship recipient! The DVGI Annual Student Night was such an inspiring evening filled with passionate student research, valuable networking, and incredible support from the geotechnical community. I had the opportunity to present my poster and share insights from my work on “ASSESSING TEMPORAL VARIATIONS IN DYNAMIC CONE PENETRATION AND SHEAR WAVE VELOCITY ON A SANDY BEACH”. Very grateful for the conversations and encouragement I received! A heartfelt thank you to my advisor, Dr. Jonathan Hubler, and to Theresa Andrejack Loux, Ph.D., P.E., ENV SP, DVGI Chair, for organizing such a successful and impactful event at Villanova University. Your efforts made this night truly special! Proud to represent Villanova University and the Villanova Center for Resilient Water Systems, and congrats to all the talented scholarship recipients, especially my fellow VCRWS colleague Sarah Burghardt, EIT Thanks as well to all my fellow VCRWS students for showing up and their support: Fatih POLAT Melinda Eason, P.E. Meg Taylor Catherine Marino, EIT , EunSik Choi, and Alumni Anupam Raj Bhattarai and to faculty member Dr. Kristin Sample-Lord for being there and cheering us on! #DVGI #StudentNight #ASCE #GeoInstitute #GeotechnicalEngineering #CoastalResearch #ScholarshipRecipient #SoilErosion #VillanovaUniversity #VCRWS #ResilientInfrastructure #Mentorship #FutureLeaders #EngineeringCommunity #Networking
