Many thanks to Richard Thompson and all his colleagues at the RSPCA for inviting us to their Mallydams Wood WIldlife Centre. The GOWRS team had an productive week and the exercise with the RSPCA was a superb example of how the members of GOWRS collaborate on exercises that can help organisations identify gaps in their preparedness. Many thanks to the members of GOWRS for participating in a great week! Last week experts from the Global Oiled Wildlife Response System ( GOWRS Ltd )met with RSPCA representatives from Wildlife, Veterinary and Operations for an oil spill assessment team tabletop exercise. It was an excellent event and both parties gained a great deal from the experience which highlighted the need to review RSPCA oil spill preparedness in the changing world.

The deadline for abstracts for The Effects of Oiled Wildlife Conference has been extended to the 17th April. The program committee is particularly interested in more poster and panel presentations. GOWRS members, International Bird Rescue and Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research, Inc., founders of the EOW conference are working with another GOWRS member, Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) to host the conference in Cape Town. This is to commemorate 25 year since the Treasure Oil Spill disaster when over 19,000 oiled African penguins were rescued and released. The event will also highlight the plight of the African penguin, whose numbers have declined so drastically, that the species has been recently uplisted to Critically Endangered by the IUCN as the species could go extinct by 2035. #oiled #wildlife #assessment #preparedness #wildliferesponse #penguin
Are you a researcher, conservationist, policymaker, or working to address the impact of oil spills on wildlife? The GOWRS Network members will be gathering together next week for their first in person meeting of 2025. This meeting will be hosted by the RSPCA at Mallydams Wood Wildlife Centre in East Sussex, UK. The RSPCA last hosted the GOWRS Network in 2020 where the Network members were able to meet the RSPCA’s Chief Executive and senior staff. This year, there will be an opportunity to meet some of the RSPCA’s wildlife centre management staff. We have a busy week planned but we are looking forward to meeting up again in person. Special thanks to Richard Thompson and RSPCA for helping to organise the meeting.
