Last month, Generation STEAM celebrated International Women's Day by inviting 200 high school girls from San Diego Unified School District’s Career, College & Technical Education (CCTE) Programs to participate in our Women Who Inspire Conference. This day-long conference was held at UCSD’s Park & Market on March 6th and offered students from five Title 1 high schools the opportunity to participate in workshops, network with peers, and attend self-elected speaker sessions. During this event, we hosted over 50 industry speakers from 14 companies, offering a total of 16 unique workshops. Thank you to the companies who made this program possible: Northrop Grumman, General Atomics, Aspen Neuroscience, Inc., Viasat, Carollo Engineers, Hologic, Inc., Insmed Incorporated, Maravai LifeSciences, National Marine Mammal Foundation, Neomorph, Inc., North Island Credit Union, Qualcomm, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and US Army. Thank you to the 21,558 attendees and 150+ exhibitors who joined us at the 17th annual San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering, held Saturday, March 1 at Petco Park. It was a fantastic day filled with inspiration, education and fun! Students and families from all corners of San Diego County engaged with the innovative spectrum of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) right here in our backyard, replete with hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations and energizing speakers. It takes true community spirit and engagement to build a successful Festival and to support ongoing programs. We’re so grateful to all of our sponsors and partners, including our longtime presenting sponsor, the Illumina Corporate Foundation. Our mission is to provide meaningful year-round STEAM experiences for youth and adults alike in San Diego, and throughout the state of CA, isn’t possible without companies and organizations committed to the community. Mark your calendars: Next year's Festival will be back at Petco Park on Saturday, March 7, 2026. Please reach out to Annie Warner at awarner@biocom.org with any questions and/or to secure your spot as an exhibitor for 2026!

Last month, Kura Oncology, Inc. partnered with Generation STEAM, for a day of giving back to the community. The day began with a presentation on Kura Oncology's work, followed by a facility tour, career panel, and speed mentoring for 27 students from Helix Charter High School’s Biotechnology CTE Program. During this interactive experience, students got a chance to see some of their course topics out of the classroom and in the lab, and connect in small groups on their strengths and interests. Thank you so much to our partners at Kura Oncology for supporting the next generation of innovators! Calling all companies and professionals in London! Generation STEAM is thrilled to take our Girls Who Lead Externship international. This April, our team members, Dolores Flores and Annie Warner, will travel to London through YTILI | Young Transatlantic Innovation Leaders Initiative, a professional exchange program with American Councils for International Education and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) to implement this initiative in partnership with Motivez, a local youth focused organization. This program will mirror our annual Girls Who Lead Externship, which has provided high school girls in San Diego with hands-on STEAM career experiences, resume-building workshops, and mentorship from industry professionals. Last summer alone, we impacted 80 students—and now, we’re bringing this initiative to London! We are looking for companies and professionals in the greater London area to host 20 students for a 1–3-hour immersive learning experience during the week of April 7th. This can take the form of a: 💡 Career panel 🤝 Networking session 🏢 Facility tour 🔬 Hands-on activity or workshop If you or someone you know is interested in inspiring the next generation of STEAM leaders, we’d love to connect. Tag a colleague, share this post, or reach out directly. Let’s make an impact together! What a week of connections and inspiration in the life sciences! From hosting the Biocom California Institute Life Science Career Fellowship Networking Mixer to providing an opportunity for the 2025 Fellows on an exclusive tour of Catalent Pharma Solutions here in San Diego, to celebrating International Women’s Day at the Women Who Inspire Conference—it’s been nonstop, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. A huge shoutout to Generation STEAM for putting on such a phenomenal event! Hearing from Saundra Pelletier, CEO of Evofem Biosciences, Inc., as the keynote speaker was nothing short of incredible—her journey and leadership in the industry are truly inspiring. Weeks like these remind me why I love the work I do—supporting talent, building connections, and helping shape the future of life sciences. Here’s to continued growth, innovation, and lifting each other up! #LifeSciences #Networking #WomenWhoInspire #InternationalWomensDay #Fellowship

What an incredible day at Generation STEAM Women of Impact—200 high school students, endless inspiration, and a room full of future changemakers. I had the privilege of kicking off the event with the opening keynote, but the real highlight? First Lieutenant Alma Cooper closing us out with a message that will stay with me for a long time. At just 23 years old, Alma is already a force—Miss USA, a U.S. Army officer, and now pursuing her master’s in data science at Stanford. Talk about inspiring! On top of all that, today is her birthday—Happy Birthday, Alma! 🎉 She left us with two powerful mantras that I’ll be carrying forward: 💡 "If you can see me, you can be me." 💡 "Never be the first person to say 'no' to yourself." These words resonate so deeply—especially for the young women in the room who are dreaming big but may still be figuring out how to take that first step. We need more leaders like Alma, showing the next generation that no dream is out of reach. To all the young minds in attendance — go after what sets your soul on fire, and never let self-doubt be the reason you don’t try. 🚀 #WomenOfImpact #GenerationSTEAM #STEMLeadership #FutureLeaders #NeverSayNoToYourself Biocom California
