[ PROJECT UPDATE ] Wind turbine blades are continuously exposed to extreme weather conditions. Early fault detection and effective maintenance strategies are essential to ensure their longevity and operational efficiency. To address these challenges, #EOLIAN is developing structural health monitoring technologies and operation & maintenance methodologies for blades. The objectives: ✅ enable early detection of ice accretion and structural damage ✅ optimise turbine performance ✅ extend the lifespan of wind turbine blades In Work Package 4, project partners Proplast, Politecnico di Milano, Norvento Enerxía, Brunel Composites Centre (BCC) and Tekniker are addressing the integration of sensors and actuators to ensure robust data acquisition, real-time analysis, and control. Significant progress has already been made in the manufacture of a blade prototype with integrated sensors and actuators. Bio-based, repairable & recyclable vitrimer composites & advanced sensors for highly reliable, sustainable wind blades
About us
The EOLIAN project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 101147532. OUR PARTNERS: Proplast (project coordinator), Politecnico di Milano, Zorlu Enerji, IRES, Norvento Enerxía, Tekniker, European Composites Industry Association (EuCIA), AEP Polymers, Entelea, Brunel Composites Centre (Brunel University London). OUR GOAL: The development of wind turbine blades with longer lifetime, better maintainability and reliability, together with higher sustainability and recyclability. This will be achieved by the use of biobased reparable and recyclable basalt fibre-reinforced vitrimer composites and the integration of advanced recyclable sensors and actuators which will perform structural health monitoring of the blades. The design phases will be supported by advanced multiscale modelling to ensure the highest performance levels and by LCA-based environmental analysis to guarantee the best approach in terms of carbon footprint and sustainability. Funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or CINEA. 💡 EOLIAN – new options for wind turbine blade #recycling. Current wind turbine blades are challenging to recycle, mainly due to their complex design and the thermoset composites used in their manufacture. The vitrimer composites being developed in #EOLIAN will pave the way to different end-of-life opportunities for blades: ✅ Reuse (thermoforming) ✅ Chemical recycling ♻️ EOLIAN will develop blades based on new vitrimer composites and demonstrate how they can be recycled. [ PROJECT UPDATE ] Towards an even greener wind energy industry! #EOLIAN is developing a new generation of sustainable wind turbine blades manufactured using bio-based repairable and recyclable vitrimer composites. In Work Package 1, industrial partners Norvento Enerxía and Zorlu Energy Group will specify the requirements, so that the composites developed in the project can fulfil the wind industry’s requirements. A detailed specification of the materials requirements for blade design and manufacturing has already been produced. This information will be used to tune the vitrimer resin’s properties and develop new composite materials. In parallel, Norvento will start the design and manufacture of two 14 m long blades: a traditional blade manufactured with glass fibre and epoxy resin; and a bio-based blade manufactured using basalt fibre and vitrimer resin. The properties and performance of the new bio-based solution will be evaluated. [ PROJECT UPDATE ] In the pursuit of more sustainable materials for wind turbine blades, EOLIAN is developing innovative bio-based #vitrimer resins, offering a promising alternative to traditional epoxy systems. These next-generation materials are designed to exhibit advanced functionalities thanks to the presence of dynamic covalent bonds, which impart exceptional properties such as #repairability, reshapeability, and recyclability. The collaborative efforts of Proplast, Tekniker and AEP Polymers are paving the way for the development of these cutting-edge materials, addressing the challenges associated with meeting the stringent performance specifications required for their application in the wind energy sector. One of the most exciting breakthroughs so far has been the demonstration of composites #recyclability. Preliminary results indicate that a simple hydrolysis process is sufficient to break down the vitrimer matrix, allowing for the efficient separation of the reinforcing fibre. This innovation holds significant potential for the circular economy. The new vitrimer resins will be utilised by Politecnico di Milano to fabricate basalt fibre-reinforced thermoset composites at the coupon level. The goal is to benchmark their performance against conventional glass fibre epoxy composites, following the specifications provided by Norvento Enerxía, a key player in renewable energy solutions.
