About us
Cyclotron Road, a Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurial Program (LEEP) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, supports leading entrepreneurial scientists as they advance technology projects with the potential for global impact. The program manages a fellowship that supports entrepreneurial scientists and engineers as they develop globally impactful and commercially viable technology products. Since 2015, in partnership with the non-profit Activate, fellows have collaborated with more than 70 Berkeley Lab scientists, and the organizations they’ve founded have raised more than $1.1 billion in follow-on funding, hired over 1000 employees, and introduced new products across industries.

Congratulations to our partners at Activate, we are so lucky to work with you in supporting our innovators!
Activate just won East Bay Economic Development Alliance's 2025 Innovation Award in the Catalyst category as an “organization fueling entrepreneurship and enacting meaningful change in the community through training and mentorship”! Activate Berkeley managing director Jill Fuss, fellowship manager Abbey Thompson, and senior fellowship associate Caroline Kushel were present to accept the award on behalf of Activate with our friends Todd Pray and Thomas Kirchstetter from Cyclotron Road cheering from the audience. 🎉 From being a nominee in 2019 to taking home the award in 2025, our growth reflects the strength of our fellows and the broader ecosystem we’re building in Berkeley together with Cyclotron Road. We’re proud to stand alongside Activate fellows who have been recognized with this award in previous years, including Twelve, co-founded by Etosha (Eee-tah-sha) Cave and Kendra Kuhl, and Nelumbo, Inc, led by Lance Brockway and David Walther. It is a huge honor to be recognized for our role in fueling deep-tech innovation and empowering scientists to turn breakthroughs into real-world impact. Congratulations to all the incredible finalists shaping the future of innovation!

We love seeing alum Umaro Foods in the news and in the local grocery aisle!
Woo! The hotly anticipated forecast from Whole Foods Market named "Aquatic Plant-Based Ingredients" as up-and-coming trend for 2025. 🌊 🌿 Sea moss is a type of seaweed, long used for its gelling properties and now a trending ingredient. 🌊 🌿 Our bacon boasts seaweed in two places - our protein ingredient from nori (which you all know from sushi) and another key ingredient source is sea moss. 🌊 🌿 Our product exists thanks to the special properties of these ingredients. Bacon isn't the first thing that would come to mind when thinking about foods that use seaweed ingredients, and that is by design. 🌊 🌿 We're excited to continue leveraging the unique functional properties of seaweed to make great products. Stay tuned!
