Breaking News: Major Tariff Update! As our Chief Economist Jonathan Smoke feared, the “unthinkable” has happened. New automotive-specific tariffs of 25% on all imported vehicles are now in place, shaking up the automotive landscape. What does this mean? • Sales Surge: New-vehicle sales hit 1.59 million units in March, up 11% YoY and 30% from February, with consumers buying now to avoid the impacts of new tariff-affected inventory. • Inventory Impact: New-vehicle inventory rose to 2.67 million units in March, but days’ supply dropped to 71 due to strong sales. Likewise, used inventory fell to 2.15 million units with a 38-day supply. • Price Hikes: New tariffs will impact 80% of vehicles priced under $30,000. Expect prices to rise 10-15% for the most heavily impacted vehicles and 5% for others.
