The largest volunteer-based free health clinic in the nation, serving uninsured Chicagoans for more than 30 years.

About us

Founded in 1993, CommunityHealth is dedicated to serving the uninsured and underserved in Chicago and surrounding communities. We provide over 17,000 medical and dental visits for more than 10,000 patients every year. This level of care is made possible thanks to the time and talent of more than 1,000 volunteers, including 350+ providers (physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, counselors, etc.). CommunityHealth’s main facility, the Lederman Family Health Center, is located in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. In 2010, we opened a satellite in Chicago’s south side Englewood neighborhood — a community with great need and limited resources. As the largest volunteer-based free medical facility in the United States, we offer demonstrated success and an innovative model for providing compassionate and comprehensive medical and dental care to the uninsured. If you are interested in supporting CommunityHealth, you can be sure that your donation is truly making a difference. That’s because every dollar we spend translates to more than $8.00 in care delivered. As a totally free, volunteer-based organization, we receive no reimbursement from Medicare, Medicaid, or third-party payers. We rely on support from individuals, foundations, corporations, and institutions for more than 95% of our revenue. CommunityHealth simply could not exist without your commitment.

We just opened our fourth location, CommunityHealth at The Resurrection Project, last week and we’ve already helped dozens of patients gain better access to high-quality, culturally competent health care.   This new microsite clinic is more than just a place for medical care – it’s a lifeline for those who face barriers to health access, whether it’s a lack of transportation, financial resources, and language barriers, or low trust in traditional healthcare systems. By breaking down these barriers, the clinic provides a safe, welcoming space for patients who might otherwise go without the care they need.   Thank you to our partner, AbbVie Foundation, for supporting us on our journey to open these doors and provide access to health care for all! We opened our fourth location, CommunityHealth at The Resurrection Project, yesterday! The new clinic is a partnership with The Resurrection Project, a social impact organization dedicated to creating community ownership, building wealth, and providing resources to Chicago’s southwest neighborhoods, at their Casa Hidalgo location. This new microsite clinic offers a variety of essential healthcare services, including doctor visits, lab work, medication pickup, and referrals to dental and specialty care for uninsured and underinsured adults in Chicago. Thank you to Rep. Chuy García for Congress, State Sen. Celina Villanueva, and State Rep. Theresa Mah, Ph.D. for coming out to support! Today, CommunityHealth and The Resurrection Project proudly opened CommunityHealth at The Resurrection Project, a new microsite health center bringing much-needed care to Back of the Yards. Health justice means showing up where disinvestment has persisted, ensuring communities have the care they deserve. Today, we turned hope into action—bringing quality health care closer to home. A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated teams and the advocates at the state and federal levels who champion this work. Together, we are building a healthier, more just future.

"Patients of the free clinic for uninsured individuals in Chicago are canceling appointments or converting them to phone consultations out of fear of deportation, due to the intensified immigration policy of President Trump. The management of Community Health, which has primarily served Latino and Polish patients for over 30 years, is concerned that this may adversely affect the health of immigrant communities in Chicago."
