🔋 Battery Pass: Wrapping up and looking ahead 🔋
After three years of dedicated work to lay the foundation for battery passports in Europe and provide businesses with the knowledge, tools, and frameworks to prepare for the EU Battery Regulation, the Battery Pass project has officially concluded!
Yesterday at HANNOVER MESSE, we symbolically handed over our final project results to State Secretary Michael Kellner from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
What we achieved together:
✅ Established content & technical standards, including the first-ever industry standard for battery passports, DIN DKE SPEC 99100
✅ Developed a software demonstrator & open data model
✅ Delivered a Value Assessment, analysing the benefits and business value of battery passports
✅ Showcased our physical battery passport model (built with LEGO® bricks) at major industry events
✅ Engaged with thousands through webinars, conferences & expert discussions

➡️ What’s next?
While Battery Pass has concluded, the real work is just beginning! With the February 2027 implementation requirement as per EU Battery Regulation signaling the EU-wide “go live” of battery passports, our consortium members will be advancing their own implementations. Meanwhile, the work of Battery Pass will be taken forward through new initiatives including:
🔹 Battery Pass Ready (BMWK-funded, led by acatech & Fraunhofer IPK): Creating a testing environment for companies, particularly SMEs, to ensure their systems meet data completeness, structure, and format requirements, and to facilitate interactions among economic operators, IT service providers, and the European Commission.
🔹 Chem-X Projekt (BMWK-funded) – Developing an interoperable data space for chemicals & materials.
🔹 Path.Era – A collaboration of industry leaders to create a trusted battery passport & digital product passport ecosystem.
🙏 A final thank you to our consortium lead Systemiq Ltd. Ltd and our consortium members acatech – Deutsche Akademie der Technikwissenschaften, AUDI AG, BASF, BMW Group, Circulor, FIWARE, Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK, TWAICE, Umicore, VDE Renewables GmbH. Thank you as well as to BMWK and VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH for their funding and programme support, and to our Advisory Board for their invaluable guidance.
📢 Please note: This account will no longer be actively monitored, but our website and resources remain available (hosted by acatech).
