The AIANY Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) is pleased to share the message of the City of Yes for Housing Opportunity. A New York City Zoning Resolution amendment approved on December 5, 2024, City of Yes is not only the largest amendment since 1961, but also makes it possible to build a little bit more housing in every neighborhood, thus helping to alleviate our housing crisis. This program is intended as an opportunity for young professionals to better understand the zoning intent directly from policymakers, and to help them embrace new opportunities. Join us for a training session and a presentation by the NYC Department of City Planning (DCP)'s Frank Ruchala Jr, Director of Zoning, and Christopher Hayner, Deputy Director of Zoning, who will offer a quick overview of the zoning changes and elaborate more technical details. The presentation will be followed by Q&A session. Register here: https://bit.ly/4cwsR8W

AIA New York (est. 1857) serves 5,500 architects and allies. Its partner, Center for Architecture, serves the public.
About us
Founded in 1857, the American Institute of Architects New York (AIANY) is the oldest and largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Members include more than 5,500 practicing architects, allied professionals, students, and public members interested in architecture and design. AIANY is dedicated to three goals: design excellence, public outreach, and professional development. AIANY shares a home with sister organization Center for Architecture, a leading cultural venue for architecture and the built environment in New York City, informed by the complexity of the City’s urban fabric and in dialogue with the global community. The Center for Architecture has the unique advantage of drawing upon the ideas and experiences of practicing architects to produce thought-provoking exhibitions, informative public programs, and quality design education experiences for K-12 students. It also leads New York City’s annual month-long architecture and design festival, Archtober. The Center for Architecture’s aim is to further public knowledge about New York City architecture and architects, foster exchange and collaboration among members of the design, development, building, scholarly, and policy sectors, and inspire new ideas about the role of design in communities by presenting contemporary and practical issues in architecture and urbanism to a general audience.

AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini are transforming the way we work. But architecture firms are using artificial intelligence and machine learning for more than just automation and email writing. Many have embraced advancements in these technologies and have developed their own proprietary tools to evolve their practices. On April 23, join Architectural Record, Marc Syp from Gensler, Jonah Hawk from ZGF Architects, and Ellis Herman from Autodesk for a robust and expansive conversation aimed at emerging professionals that cuts through the hype to investigate the growing role AI is playing in the firm and how it will (and won't) change the practice of architecture. Join us Thursday, April 17, for Designing for Public Life, Dialogue 1: Searching for Superpublics: https://bit.ly/4cmgImV In the opening conversation of the series Designing for Public Life: The Dialogues, Benjamin Gilmartin, AIA, of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Ivi Diamantopoulou, AIA, and Jaffer Kolb of New Affiliates will reflect broadly on the question “what era of public space are we in now?" Following Hurricane Sandy and the pandemic, new large-scale forms of public realm are emerging. There is a pressing need to reconstruct New York City’s perimeter, and we’re seeing new public programs interwoven with coastal resilience. Diamantopoulou, Gilmartin, and Kolb, who are collaborating on the upcoming fall exhibition Searching for Superpublics at the Center for Architecture, are passionate and deeply curious about how public spaces are gathering and collecting across the city right now, how designers are participating in their creation, and how these new forms of connective space are refiguring the nature our shared civic, social, and cultural life. Speakers: Ivi Diamantopoulou, AIA, Co-founder, New Affiliates Ben Gilmartin, AIA, Partner, Diller Scofidio + Renfro; 2025 President, AIA New York Jaffer Kolb, Co-founder, New Affiliates

According to NCARB by the Numbers 2022, people of color remain critically underrepresented in the architecture field, with BIPOC only accounting for 17% of architects nationwide. Created by AIANY 2021 President Kenneth A. Lewis, AIA, in collaboration with nycoba | NOMA (NY Coalition of Black Architects|National Organization of Minority Architects - NY), the 2030 Fund seeks to change this statistic, providing student loan debt relief and licensure support for aspiring BIPOC architects pursuing licensure. It also seeks to support NOMA’s 2030 Challenge, which aims to double the number of licensed Black architects by the end of the decade. Apply by next Monday, April 14!
