📊 2025 Carsharing Statistics Are In — Germany Continues to Lead in Growth and Climate Impact 🇩🇪 The Bundesverband Carsharing e.V. has released its annual report, and the numbers tell a powerful story about German carsharing and its powerful role in creating more sustainable cities and reducing private car ownership. Key Highlights: 🚗 45,400 vehicles offered by 297 providers across 1,393 municipalities (+5.3% YoY vehicle growth) 🚗 Station-based and combined systems: 18,000 vehicles across 1,385 locations 🚗 Free-floating operators: 27,400 vehicles in 44 municipalities 20.9% of station-based fleets are electric (vs. 3.3% of national car fleet) The Impact: 🌍 Each car-sharing vehicle replaces 10.7 private cars, avoiding the need for 174,600 cars 🌍 This saves 1.9 million m² of parking space (worth ~€2.4 billion in construction costs) 🌍 An estimated 234,000 tons of CO₂ are saved annually through changed mobility habits Growth isn’t limited to cities, over 1,230 municipalities with fewer than 50,000 residents now offer car sharing. The total number of authorized drivers in station-based systems is 875,000. Car sharing continues to prove its value not only as a mobility service, but as a key tool in reducing emissions, reclaiming urban space, and shifting behavior. As cities push for greener, more efficient mobility, carsharing operators are making a major shift to electric vehicles (EVs). But is this enough to convince people to ditch private car ownership? For many urban dwellers, car ownership is no longer a necessity. Rising costs, congestion, and improved shared mobility options mean that flexibility and access are now more important than ownership. Take Ieva Mackeviciute from Lithuania—she commutes using carsharing but still owns a private car for longer trips. This is a common pattern: while many love the convenience and cost savings of shared mobility, challenges like availability and accessibility still keep people from fully making the switch. This is where EVs come in. Cities worldwide are incentivizing electric mobility with free parking, lower fees, and sustainability benefits, making EV carsharing more attractive. Companies like SPARK Technologies in Lithuania and Kite Mobility in Canada are already leading the way with fully electric fleets—even integrating carsharing into residential communities to reduce car dependency. Yet, despite these innovations, the adoption of carsharing is still slow. In the UK, there are two million car-sharing users compared to 35 million private car owners. Why?
