#IWD may have officially come and gone, but the conversation around empowering women never stops! 💪 Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting Modo at our Vancouver PayByPhone office for an inspiring discussion about women in mobility and tech. Two organizations from the same city, tackling similar challenges, coming together to share insights - not just about mobility, but also about careers in tech, #leadership, and #empowerment. Our speakers shared invaluable perspectives on their journeys, offering advice on how we can support and uplift girls and young women from an early age, helping them recognize their choices, build confidence, and stay true to their values. We also explored the role of networks, #mentorship, and how leaders can actively champion the women on their teams, whether through honest feedback, support, or, for male allies, by seeking mentorship and training when leading predominantly female teams. It was a lighthearted yet powerful conversation, filled with actionable takeaways. A big thank you to everyone who joined us. Starting another mini series highlighting female pioneers - this one about women that have shaped the co-operative movement. First up: Mary Ellicott Arnold—a co-operative pioneer, housing advocate, and social justice leader who championed economic self-sufficiency through collective action. Arnold studied business and agriculture, and lived with the Karok nation for a while. She believed in the power of co-operatives to uplift communities, particularly working-class and marginalized groups. With her lifelong partner Mabel Reed, she helped establish and manage co-operative housing, worker co-ops, and consumer co-ops, ensuring people had access to fair wages, affordable living, and economic autonomy. Her Impact on Co-operatives: ✔ Housing Co-operatives – Advocated for affordable housing solutions and helped coal miners in Nova Scotia establish co-operative homes. ✔ Worker & Consumer Co-operatives – Organized economic alternatives that put power back into the hands of workers and consumers. ✔ Women’s Leadership – Encouraged women to take active roles in co-operative governance, challenging the status quo in the early 20th century. Arnold’s legacy reminds us that co-operation isn’t just about business—it’s about building resilient, self-sustaining communities where everyone has a voice. Thanks Jane Hope for highlighting her. Today's is #iwd and this post is about a special transportation trailblazer because this lady has ties to British Columbia. Aloha Wanderwell (1906–1996) was a Canadian explorer, filmmaker, and aviator who became the first woman to drive around the world. Born Idris Hall in Winnipeg, Manitoba, she moved to Vancouver Island, living in Parksville and Duncan. At just 16 years old, she joined an expedition led by Walter Wanderwell, an adventurer promoting world peace through travel. She became a driver, mechanic, and cinematographer, documenting her travels. Between 1922 and 1927, she drove over 500,000 miles across 80 countries, navigating some of the world's most challenging terrains in a Ford Model T. During her travels, she became fluent in multiple languages, filmed indigenous cultures rarely seen by outsiders, and flew an airplane in Brazil. Her footage remains an important record of early 20th-century exploration.
