Boston Harbor Now champions Boston Harbor for everyone.
About us
Boston Harbor Now champions Boston Harbor for everyone. Boston Harbor played a key role in the creation of our nation. Today, the Harbor is critical to the health and well-being of our citizens and economy. Together, we can lead the nation in building a 21st Century waterfront – a waterfront that provides unprecedented opportunities for public use and is well-adapted to climate change. Boston Harbor Now is the only non-profit organization that focuses on Boston Harbor as a whole, working for change that benefits everyone. We promote collaboration between the public and private sectors, drawing on our years of success with the Harbor Cleanup, and creation of the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park (2,000 acres) and the Harborwalk (43 miles). We are uniquely positioned to leverage investments by the private sector and public agencies, including the City of Boston, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the National Park Service.

You may have driven or ridden past this humble sewage pumping station on Route 99 near the Encore Boston Harbor resort many times without giving it a second thought. Just imagine it becoming a new ferry terminal that serves as the gateway for not only visitors to the casino and a potential future New England Revolution soccer stadium in Everett, but thousands of North Shore commuters and people heading to and from Boston for school, work, and fun. Add in connections to a future Silver Line extension and Commuter Rail stop to make it even more useful, and then use the site for another extension of our Harborwalk, one of the region's crown jewels. This is the very intriguing vision laid out by Jon Chesto in his latest from Boston Globe Media. Lots of details to be worked out and questions to be asked and answered, and Boston Harbor Now is excited to be helping lead the conversation. https://lnkd.in/eRFjQ5SZ

It is fantastic news for commuters, visitors, and our regional economy that the MBTA will be doubling the frequency of ferry service from Winthrop and Quincy to Boston this spring and cutting travel time by more than half on both routes. Boston Harbor Now commends the T for making water transportation an even more attractive option for getting to and from Boston from North Shore and South Shore communities. Continuing to expand water transportation options is a great way to support the vibrancy of Greater Boston, expand access to jobs, education, and cultural opportunities, reduce congestion on our highways, and help more people experience the beauty and inspiration of Boston Harbor, the harbor islands, and the waterfront. I’m excited for the launch of these improved services, starting at the end of this month. https://lnkd.in/esPVe_Nt David Perry

Our annual Onboard Awards, which celebrate the businesses, agencies, organizations, and leaders who exemplify responsible planning and development along Boston’s waterfront, are always a high point of our year at Boston Harbor Now. This year’s awards were especially moving and inspiring. Hearing my predecessor Vivien Li, a true advocate, recount all she has done to build our Harborwalk and transform our waterfront into the clean, vibrant, and accessible treasure it is today left me with true tears of joy. Vivien graciously reflected so much credit back to dozens of people by name—those whom she pushed, cajoled, and inspired to create the Harborwalk and Harbor and Islands National State Park we all cherish today—but make no mistake: she is the heroine of this story. Congratulations as well to Ann and Chuck Lagasse of Ocean Havens, whose Charlestown Marina section of the Harborwalk sets the gold standard and values to build on for the future of the Harborwalk to create and resilient and accessible Harborwalk for the next 40 years and beyond. Finally, my heartfelt thanks to all my colleagues at Boston Harbor Now for their incredible hard work to make this event so special, to our generous sponsors, and to all who attended.
