About us
Welcome to BAMBOO, a visionary project transforming Europe's approach to renewable energy. Our goal is ambitious: to develop a groundbreaking Offshore Solar system spanning 1 km² and capable of producing 150 MW. This initiative is set to become a model for future offshore solar projects, crucial for Europe's climate goals for 2030 and 2050. At BAMBOO, we're combining solar energy with offshore wind farms, tapping into the vast potential of the sea. This innovative approach not only boosts energy production but also uses maritime space efficiently and sustainably, minimising the impact on marine life. Faced with the challenges of the sea's harsh conditions, we're advancing through cutting-edge innovations. Our project includes the world's first large-scale tests for offshore solar systems at sea and developing a unique floating substation designed for these conditions. We're also pioneering new standards in offshore solar technology. Our team, a blend of expert companies and research organisations, is dedicated to ensuring the project's success. We're making strides in reducing emissions and positively impacting the marine ecosystem. Join us as we lead Europe towards a greener, more sustainable energy future where innovation meets environmental responsibility. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement number 101136142. 🐟 🦈 How do offshore solar and wind energy impact marine ecosystems and coastal communities—both positively and negatively? And what critical marine science is still needed to ensure a sustainable future? 🙋Over the past two days, leading European marine and social science experts gathered for the BAMBOO Project workshop, organised and hosted by the European Marine Board IVZW. Together, they explored the potential environmental and societal effects of combining offshore solar and wind energy, brainstorming how these impacts might interact. 📋🔬 They also identified key research gaps – what we still need to study to fully understand these effects and develop sustainable solutions as offshore solar expands across Europe. Stay tuned for insights and recommendations from this important discussion later this year! #BAMBOOProject #offshoresolar #marinescience #socialscience #sustainability #marine #environment #communities

🎉 Celebrating the Completion of Year One! Reflecting on Our Achievements and Looking Forward to the Future As we wrap up the first year of our ambitious BAMBOO Project, we're excited to celebrate the milestones and progress we've made. From successfully assessing site resources and selecting the perfect location for our 5 MW demonstrator farm to completing key reports such as the ex-ante environmental scoping report, environmental monitoring plan, and project execution plan, our team’s dedication has been crucial in achieving the timely completion of our first milestone: full site preparations. ☀️ Additionally, the design and engineering of the hybrid offshore array were completed on schedule, allowing us to reach our second milestone — the final design of the 5 MW demonstrator farm with hybrid platform units. We’re looking forward to the next phase, confident in our innovative approach and the promising potential of this groundbreaking project. Here’s to a year of remarkable achievements and to many more successes ahead! ➡️ Please visit our project website to reach out to the public deliverables we have prepared so far https://lnkd.in/e97_Ud-q #BAMBOOProject #offshoresolar #solarpower #renewableenergy #energytransition #cleanenergy #sustainability

📢 BAMBOO, with partners Oceans of Energy and Fraunhofer Center for Silicon Photovoltaics CSP, are cited in a news article of the German business newspaper Handelsblatt. "Hybrid (here PV+wind) energy systems ensure higher “off-shore" grid utilization, which reduces costs” is stated by Bengt Jäckel, from Fraunhofer CSP. The technology has its highest potential when integrated within wind parks. Then, the electrical infrastructure – transformers, submarine cables, on- and offshore electrical lines – would already be in place, and the offshore solar plants can be connected right to it. Allard van Hoeken, Oceans of Energy's CEO, explains how Oceans of Energy has been developing the offshore solar technology since 2016 and has been testing it in the North Sea since 2019. He states that in the BAMBOO project the goal is to scale up the technology to 1km2 standardized building blocks of 50-200 MW. “In the long-term we should see as much potential for offshore solar as offshore wind, just one percent of the North Sea area for offshore solar would be enough to cover the entire current electricity demand of the Netherlands of 100 GW,” van Hoeken calculates.
